As drawings are prepared for construction, line weights are paramount. It’s important to understand how architectural details are read, and whether you’re working on a BIM model or putting drawings together by hand, there are a range of drawing techniques to consider. In the design process of the Aviva Stadium in Dublin (pictured below), for example, the geometric principles of the structural elements and of the façade parts were present in the parametric model from the very beginning. During the design process, the contractors' suggestions and requirements, based on fabrication constraints, were incorporated in this model, which was later used as a basis for the fabrication of parts: Located in New Canaan, Connecticut, the multipurpose building and landscape project was made with Handel Architects to embrace open space for people to experience nature, encounter the arts, pursue justice, foster community and explore faith. I prepare around 150 sets of plans each year; every set requires building regulation drawings, so I use the dwg images provided to prepare standard templates for each part of the build, when I have to provide a drawing of, say, foundations, I open the appropriate template and personalise the drawing and within 15 minutes, I have a drawing ready for a builder or building control. One of OMA’s most well-known buildings, the Seattle Central Library has become a celebrated civic and cultural project. Programming was at the project’s heart from the outset, directly shaping the building’s form while combining diverse functions. Built for the circulation of knowledge across different forms of media, the library was designed to present information equally and legibly. It is composed of five platforms and four flowing planes wrapped in a steel diagrid façade. We also explore detailing carefully through 3D technologies, prototyping, and modern architectural software to give our detailing another dimension and a vantage point for discussion with builders and clients alike.
