About this deal

After my grandfather was done exercising in his garden, he would tear open the cucur udang and give me the prawns; he will eat the cucur that is empty. His mother's Karipap Pusing - mild potato curry in flaky pastry - is a delight; step-by-step instructions for those too intimidated by what appeared to be complex endeavour. For anyone with an interest in the evolution and background of a cuisine and culture, this succinct chapter is so helpful.

The freshly crowned MasterChef Champion of Champions, teacher and proud mother of two's cookbook is a delightful tome on Malaysian cuisine, breaking down the complexities of Pan Fried Seabass with Kicap Manis and Nyonya Fried Rice into simple, easy-to-follow guides that even a novice home cook can master. Also many things like the flatbread needed hours to prepare, or had to be done overnight, which is fine, if you are reading the book in advance and planning your meals, but it wasn't really a book you could just grab off the shelf and use for that evening's dinner. Her award-winning cookbook features more than 60 recipes of the most famous Kristang dishes, from fiery debal curry and black sotong sambal to indulgent sweet sago biji gula melaka and pang su see (Eurasian sweet potato buns).

One of my new favorite recipes is the Nyonya Vermicelli Noodle Salad, which features rice noodles, tofu beansprouts, and ginger with plenty of lime juice and fresh herbs (if you are vegetarian, leave out the shrimp paste and prawns). Fluent in English already, the biggest culture shock was the food – us Brits being far less food-focused (obsessed?Fantastic recipes, easy to follow, authentic flavours, and supported by interesting stories to bring each recipe alive. Mandy watched her mother cook all the family dishes they'd eaten for years and meticulously wrote down every step. Gorgeous photos of street scenes in Malaysia pepper the pages, while the gold-embossed cover looks great sitting out on a table or countertop. The prawns used are shelled and are either whole or chopped and mixed into the batter before deep-frying.

Desserts range from the effortless (fresh mango, honey and coconut, tropical fruit salad) to the more elaborate (pandan custard and sticky rice layered sweet, sticky rice balls, soy panna cotta with passion fruit and crushed chocolate cookies. On winning the coveted award, Dayana said, "I am very honoured and grateful for this award especially this being my first book, and ‘Penang Makan’ was up against so many others in the running. With Mandy’s evocative look at Malaysian food culture, her recipes, and the basics of a Malaysian pantry (shrimp paste, lemongrass, tamarind and coconut milk), you can easily enjoy the most delicious Malaysian meals at home. Dayana, who also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Toronto, said the cookbook features over 50 recipes that are carefully selected and curated for Malaysians to recreate memories of Malaysia when they are abroad. From it's regal cover, to the generous number of recipes it has to offer, Amazing Malaysian is not about taking a classic and adding a twist to it.The recipes – such as her signature curry laksa, Penang assam laksa, Malaysian fried chicken, prawn fritters, spiral curry puffs, flaky roti canai, beef rendang, KL golden fragrant clams, sambal mapo tofu, and the perfect steamed rice – can be made for a weekday family meal, a dinner party or celebration.
