If often happens that you see photos of accommodation which make the place look espectacular, in this case the photographs just don't do justice to the reality. She glimpses the sky through looking up the chimney in her cellar, until one day she looks out of a window in the house and sees the magic place she has imagined… Then follows a great adventure through the Great Black City as Clementine miraculously escapes and tries to find her magic place. Black and white illustrations on virtually every page – Wormell is feted for his wood cuts and lino cuts – with a nod to the style of Gustav Doré, give this an authentic Dickensian feel. Ce livre est un bel objet, avec une couverture rigide carrée aux couleurs vives, avec une jolie doublure vert lime style papier peint. Although, this would have been more macabre it would have created some much needed emotional and poignant scenes. Clementine has only ever known servitude and imprisonment in the smoke and grime and grey of the Great Black City.The very first children’s novel from internationally-renowned author and illustrator Chris Wormell, The Magic Place is a wonderfully gripping fairy tale, a story of escape and hope against all odds. He has won a number of literary awards including the Bologna Ragazza Prize, a Nestle Smarties Award and a Booktrust Early Years Award. I requested this book from the lovely folk at David Fickling books and I am so glad they sent it along to me.
