It’s the reason “Content is not suitable for younger readers” is plastered across the back of this book—but the inclusion of this scene and its consequences for Evie is so important that to leave it out would be a travesty. The main trio is Evie, Lottie, a super smart girl who's life mostly consists of boys and feminism, and Amber. Because feminism is hard enough when you’re a privileged white dude like me, let alone a 16-year-old girl with OCD constantly being told to be normal and pretty (but not too pretty) and smart (but not too smart) and slutty (but just the right amount of slutty). Despite the seriousness of the topic, the book is easily accessible through the use of a chatty writing style and brief chapters.

I get what Holly Bourne tried to do here and I appreciate it, but I think that ship is sailed for me. If you feel at home on Twitter, the girls' discussions on feminism may feel like conversations you've joined in with before.Considering the sensitive topics that are addressed in this book, which also turned some events into serious situations, Holly Bourne still managed to add fun and humor into the story, overall. There were moments that made me laugh way loud and made me punch-the-wall angry and just heartachingly sad. As someone who has periods, like half the population of the whole world, they shouldn't be hidden away and made a 'controversial' subject. As members of the club they regularly meet to discuss topics important to themselves, such as the portrayal of women in films, misogynistic language and body image.

After being sectioned, Evie is almost off her meds and she is starting school at a new sixth form college. It’s repetitive but also can give a fresh point of view about what it means to deal with it every day of your life. While it didn’t absolutely rock my world, it’s a well-written book with a good mix of humour and low points that accurately describe life for a teenager with poor mental health. In my opinion, the golden rule that every author should follow while writing is to never ever make the main characters mock a clinical condition of other characters.

People smile and use them, proud of themselves for learning them, like they should get a sticker or something. Things like this really made me kind of bond with Evie and get even deeper into her character and the plot, but also I loved how whilst it was showing us her personality and entertaining us and everything, it was also educating its readers by giving us all of this information from the point of view of a teenager and somebody who’s suffering with the condition themselves which made it really easy to understand and empathise with, and I imagine it's opened up a lot of people to concepts about mental illness that they wouldn’t have necessarily been exploring otherwise.

Mir hat sehr gefallen, wie gut Holly Bourne die Gefühlswelt von Teenage-Girls herausgearbeitet hat und vor welchen Problemen sie im Alltag stehen. As for OCD, I won't state an opinion simply because I don't have much knowledge of it besides the generally known concepts of it. However, I wish the feminism talked about in this book was intersectional and didn’t exclude anyone, nor made anyone feel bad for talking about men. However, the two books also share unique narrative conceits to capture the protagonist’s voice and mental state. After reading Am I Normal Yet, the first thing that came to my mind was: ”I have to get the second book ASAP!
