Description

The first distillation is made with suma mixed with 80% ethyl alcohol, followed by anise during the second distillation. During this process, red copper distillers are used (usually with a capacity of 5000 liters) where it is then separated into 3 different sections as top, belly, and bottom (referring to the layers of the distiller). When mixed with ice and/or water for drinking, it turns milky white. Because of itscolorand hefty alcoholic punch, Turks call it lion's milk (aslansütü). The major rakı-producing companies now include Burgaz, Tarışand Meyas well as Elda. The former Tekel brands of Yeni Rakı, Kulüp Rakı, Tekirdağand Altınbaşare now produced by Mey.

Where or when raki was first produced is unknown. It is first mentioned by the Ottoman explorer Evliya Çelebi during his travels in 1630. In his Book of Travels he reports that ancient people produced their own raki in small towns. [8] If you're drinking lightly with one or two friends, ask for bir otuzbeşlik rakı (BEER OH-tooz-BESH-leek, a 35-cl half-bottle).

Tekirdag Raki : The Whisky Exchange

In Turkey, rakı is the national drink and is traditionally consumed with chilled water on the side or partly mixed with chilled water and brown sugar, according to personal preference. Rakı is rarely consumed without the addition of water. Ice cubes are often added. Dilution with water causes rakı to turn a milky-white colour, similar to the louche of absinthe. This phenomenon has resulted in the drink being popularly referred to aslan sütü ('lion's milk'). [10] Since aslan ('lion') is a Turkish colloquial metaphor for a strong, courageous person, this gives the term a meaning close to 'the milk for the strong'.Most bespoke restaurants serve delicious mezes as well. Yet, if it is not known for this ritual specifically, either the music or the overall atmosphere will not match what you can experience at a nostalgic tavern. The alcohol percentage varies between 42% to %50, depending on where it is made and the label it bears. Nevertheless, the classical Yeni Raki, getting its taste from a mixture of 20 different grapes, is 45% alcoholic. Rakı or raki, ( / r ɑː ˈ k iː/, Turkish pronunciation: [ɾaˈkɯ] ⓘ) is an alcoholic drink made of twice-distilled grapes. [1] It is the national drink of Turkey. [2] [ bettersourceneeded] It is also popular in other Balkan countries as an apéritif as well as in Kazakhstan. It is often served with seafood or meze. It is comparable to several other alcoholic beverages available around the Mediterranean and the Middle East, e.g. pastis, ouzo, sambuca, arak and aguardiente. A traditional rakı sofrası("rakı table") bears dozens of meze(MEH-zeh, Turkish hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, salads, cheeses, etc.) but the two essentials are salty white sheeps'-milk cheese (beyazpeynir)and sweet yellow melon (kavun). Drink it only with people you have good conversations with, who are tolerant, know how to listen, and someone you enjoy having a conversation with, and that you have the tolerance for listening.

Kıbrıs Rakı Festivali". kibrisrakifestivali.com (in Turkish). Archived from the original on 23 August 2018. There are several historical places in the city; one of them is the Rakoczy Museum, a Turkish house dating from the 17th century built by Hungarian prince Ferenc Rakoczy II in 1720, who lived here until his death in 1735. The Rustem Pasha Mosque, the Tekirdag Museum and the statue of Namik Kemal, a celebrated patriotic poet who was born in the city, are other sights to visit in Tekirdag. While sipping rakı and nibblingmeze, there's good conversation, muchhumor, and many toasts to your companions' health (Afiyetolsun!)and prosperity (Şerefinize!). Turkish raki is either made from distilled grapes or raisins, flavored with anise. Anise (or aniseed) is a flowering plant that’s native to the eastern Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia. It’s been used for centuries to flavor food, candy, and alcoholic drinks. The exact ingredients of raki depend on the brand because each brand uses different ingredients. The history of Turkish raki hasn’t been recorded very well throughout history, so it’s almost impossible to be certain of its timeline. To our knowledge, mentions of a similar drink first popped up in 5th century Roman Empire. In 1630, Ottoman explorer Evliya Celebi first recorded mentions of raki during his travels. It wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that production of raki started ramping up. Until this time, it was made entirely in small towns, taverns, and in people’s homes.Until a few years ago, Turkish rakı was made exclusively by Tekel, the former Turkish government tobacco and spirits monopoly which produced the Yeni Rakı, Kulüp Rakı, Tekirdağand Altınbaşbrands. Some rakı factories are located nearİzmirto take advantage of its abundant, high-quality grapes, raisins, anise and sakız(mastic, pine gum), which is added to some brands. It is produced by distilling suma obtained from carefully selected fresh grapes together with high-quality aniseeds in traditional rakı alembics. It has a smooth taste and a balanced anise aroma. Tekirdağ Rakısı is made from 100 % fresh grapes and has an alcohol content of 45%.
