This series seems to focus much more on plot than character development. It’s my least favorite of Ellis’s three series. Decent, but not great. Matt Ballard is a retired detective chief inspector. Ex-DS Liz Hayes retired following a serious medical event. They have set up as private detectives, and stay fairly busy. They are hosting the nephew of Liz's previous husband, Gary for a few days and perhaps cheer him up. David is a recent graduate of high school, a young man keenly anticipating entry into the police academy, but he has been turned down due to his lifelong health problems, asthma, and limited endurance.

The small market town of Fenfleet seems to be overwhelmed by crime lately and it’s up to Matt and Liz to get to the bottom of the dangerous forces that are at play in this beautiful part of the world. Will Matt and Liz manage to unmask the perpetrators intent on wreaking maximum havoc and destruction in Fenfleet? Or will getting far too close to the truth end up putting them in danger? The nostalgia gauge is code-red on Last Night in Soho, a gaudy time-travel romp that whisks its modern-day heroine to a bygone London that probably never existed outside our fevered cultural imagination. It’s the era of Dusty Springfield and Biba; great music, cool threads. British writer-director Edgar Wright takes a grab-bag of 1960s ingredients, paints them up and makes them dance to his tune. His film is thoroughly silly and stupidly enjoyable. To misquote William Faulkner, the past isn’t dead, it’s propping up the bar at the Café de Paris.LAX is decorated in “rich, red leathers and adorned with oversized mirrors and shimmering chandeliers”. The lavish decor attracts socialites, celebrities, tourists and locals alike. To add to the feel of luxury, there are seven VIP lofts that over look the first level dance floor. VIP tables surround the elevated DJ booth in front of the dance floor to make sure if you’re a guest there you can see, but most importantly be seen. More VIP table areas are located closely behind the central dance floor. In this book we see the pair trying to help David, a relative who has had lifetime dreams of joining the Police only to fail the exercise tests due to a childhood illness. With his dreams in tatters can Liz and Matt help him find a new direction for his career? I am hoping to find out more about David in future books. Joy Ellis knows how to set a scene. I could put this book down. Intricately plotted the strands are gathered together providing an on the edge of your seat mystery. Highly recommended. Matt and Liz Ballard are, as usual, absolutely superb. Sharp, intuitive, brave and courageous, in their latest case they are going to need to keep their wits about them in their search for the truth.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Simon is missing. He was staying with his Aunt Jessie in a cottage on the edge of the marsh. And his older sister Kellie is increasingly worried. It was a book I couldn’t wait to finish but I didn’t want it to end! I’m already looking forward to the next. Young Toby Unsworth is in his final year of a photography course at university. For his last assignment he will be taking pictures between sunset and sunrise - using slow shutter speed. Matt and Liz, our favorite officers turned private investigators, are hired by Alex's mother to look into the boys' deaths. She thinks there's something fishy going on but the local police write her off as a grieving mother who doesn't want to accept the death of her son. Matt and Liz take the case but warn Alex's mother that there may not be anything suspicious about their deaths and she'll have to accept that. It's only because one of Matt's old informants comes to him about a possibly related strange occurrence that he accepted the case. He doesn't believe in coincidences. Then, a crook with a good heart, Minty, is introduced; he is sure that some 'London- based big shots are moving in and seem to have chosen quiet Fenland as a distribution center for their illicit imports.Ridiculous? Well, yes, but that was the point. Foundation ceremonies could be very dreary occasions: “ragging” certainly livened things up. They were also an effective way for graduating students to “let off steam”. More importantly, they were a negotiated inversion of staff-student relations in an institution that was markedly hierarchical. “Ragging” was a classic example of “authorised transgression”. They were carnivalesque, temporarily inverting the rules and power structures while simultaneously blunting social criticism. Simon is 9 years old. He was staying with his aunt Jessie when he goes missing. His sister Kellie is worried and the police are searching for clues. Is this disappearance somehow connected? Chica appears around 1-2 AM. She will start writhing out of a hole in the wall, and you must find 3 cupcakes hidden around the office to make her go away. Failure to do so will kill you. The cupcakes can be found in each of the three entrances, behind the Chica poster, in both cabinets, and in the trash can next to the window. You can actually hear the cupcakes when you are near one of them. Also, looking at Chica will freeze her, which can buy you some needed time.

The case for Matt and Liz is 2 young men studying at university, both talented photographers but found dead in their room from carbon monoxide poisoning. A faulty boiler was to blame but was it? Alex' mother doesn't think so and asks them to investigate. Toby Unsworth is passionate about photography. In two weeks, he will be starting his final year of his photography course at university. Night photography is his speciality This is my first book by this author. I was pleased with the story and didn’t feel lost since I hadn’t read the other books. I look forward to reading the next one.

A deserted building on a poorly lit cobblestone street. A perfectly composed photograph for an aspiring student. In days, because of that photo, students Toby and his friend Alex will be dead, supposedly the result of a malfunctioning heater. Oh, and one line really pissed me off (something like) “although she was overweight, she had a beautiful complexion.” WTF, Joy? How about “she was overweight and had a beautiful complexion.” I’m all for people being described as overweight, but why “although”? Bonnie: He will appear at around 3 AM, and will appear in each camera, staring directly at it. Instead of killing you, he destroys the camera, making it so you can't see what's in there. Bonnie himself can't kill you. To counter him, simply do not look at him in the cameras. Using Bonnie to break one or two cameras on purpose is a pretty good strategy, because Foxy will always spawn on active cameras, which means that the entrances corresponding to broken cameras are totally safe to open. However, if all cameras are broken Foxy will spawn anyway and there no way to make him despawn, so break two cameras at most. Endo F: This Endo appears on Floor 3 (the long corridor). He will charge towards you from behind. You can only die to him if you turn around or fail to make it to the door in time. He speeds up tremendously if you turn around / look in his direction on Floor 3. Matt and Liz end up working closely with the police, something Matt enjoys as he misses the job but Liz is apprehensive about it since her accident and leaving the force.
