In The New York Times, Dani Shapiro called the book "spectacular... at once a breathtaking adventure tale and a profound meditation on the nature of grief and survival, ... both a literary and human triumph." [14] Shapiro wrote that unlike many parallel-arc stories, Strayed's two parallel narratives—the challenging hike itself and the difficult life events that preceded it—are delivered in perfect balance. [14] According to Shapiro, the memoir did not overdramatize its events, but followed a "powerful, yet understated, imperative to understand (their) meaning," allowing readers "to feel how her actions and her internal struggles intertwine, and appreciate the lessons she finds embedded in the natural world." Make This Book Wild by Fiona Danks, Jo Schofield

This is a unique book aimed at children ages 7-9 years old -- the idea is for the child to take it outdoors and color in the book as they follow along with a variety of prompts. Cheryl Strayed Hikes Her Way Through Heartbreak in Wild". Oprah.com (also, April 2012 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine). March 2012. Archived from the original on March 24, 2012. (Originally titled "Inward Bound: Hiking Her Way Through Heartbreak"). Eh. The text box that appears when you hover over the second star in the rating bar describes it perfectly: "it was ok." I also struggled with the idea that the main "voice" of the book was trying to prove herself as a leader in her field, but she missed OBVIOUS psychological issues with her sister, "boy friend", co-worker, best friend, etc. Seeking self-discovery and resolution of her enduring grief and personal challenges, at the age of 26, Strayed set out on her journey, alone and with no prior hiking experience. Wild intertwines the stories of Strayed's life before and during the journey, describing her physical challenges, emotional, and spiritual realizations while on the trail. As a parent who tries to achieve as much nature time as possible in hopes of raising a productive and healthy child -- I couldn't have asked for a more FUN and ENCHANTING book. Going against the grain again (not something I’ve done a lot, thankfully – maybe 3 or 4 times in the last year and a half)Leahy, Anna (February 27, 2019). "The Enduring Appeal of Cancer Lit". Los Angeles Review of Books. Archived from the original on March 7, 2019. The Nightingale is currently in production at Tri Star, with Dakota and Elle Fanning set to star. The popular tv show stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke and Season Two is currently set to conclude the series on April 27, 2023. I really hate to make this sound so harsh because I do value the ideas here! It's a beautiful book. I just wonder if a 15 year old might enjoy this kind of doodling, etc. more than a 7 year old. April 2013: For Wild, Strayed received the Reader's Choice Award in the 2013 Oregon Book Awards. [9] Interesting plot. I struggled with the quality of the writing, the easy/awkward introduction of a romantic subplot, and the oversimplification of "small town life". Just to start, in this book "small town life" = the REPEATED mention of who was homecoming queen 20 years ago by almost EVERY adult character in the novel, loads of uninformed gossip, the collective "best friendness" of the entire police department, etc., etc., & ...etc.

This is my first book by Kristin Hannah. I really enjoyed her writing style. I have The Nightingale on my list to read next. This novel was gripping from the start. There was a bit of mystery to it. At times it was quite sad but also beautiful and eye-opening. It was fascinating to learn about the child raised in the wild and how she learned to adapt to her new surroundings. Magic Hour tells the story of the two sisters Julia and Ellie who have never been particularly close. Julia is a psychiatrist living in LA. After having been involved in a tragic scandal relating to one of her patients, she feels worn down and torn with what to do next. Ellie lives in the Rain Valley, the small Washington town they grew up in, and works as a police officer. She’s been divorced twice and can’t seem to find what’s missing in her life. Ellie, who is chief of police, needs help and she knows just who to call on. Her sister Julia. Julia is a psychiatrist battling her own demons after her life imploded, when a patient of hers killed others before taking her own life. Julia feels immense guilt exacerbated by the publicity these events have received. After retreating to her home town the last thing she needs is more publicity, but she cannot ignore Ellie’s plea for help. The child has obviously been the victim of severe abuse. Julia agrees to start working with the girl, naming her Alice. But can she help or will she end up doing more harm? And why have no parents stepped forward to claim the child?

"The High Road / 'Wild,' a Hiking Memoir by Cheryl Strayed". The New York Times. Archived from the original on January 13, 2014.From the New York Times number one bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone, Kristin Hannah, comes Wild, a remarkable story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope and the promise of new beginnings. The story took many interesting and unexpected twists and turns. It was an all-around captivating read and one of my favorite Kristen Hannah books I’ve read in a while. It had a bit of everything including romance, mystery, tragedy, and drama.
