While it may not be exceptional, Benchmark proves to be a decent choice within its price range, as it avoids the unpleasant flavors often associated with budget liquors. Have you tried this, or any of the other bourbons in the Benchmark Bourbon Collection? What did you think? Cheers! Finish: The fruit intensifies with some heat that was unrecognized on the palate. There’s a lingering note of barrel char and leather baseball glove straps that give this some age. The heat is nice and smoldering, as it should be for 125 proof, but it still has some sweet and enjoyable aftertastes that linger. Score: 7.5/10 Final Thoughts

These experiences have honed my palate and provided me with a profound understanding of the vast world of spirits. Bob: The green apple candy is really prominent. I've had Crown Royal Apple and we've tried a really lovely one from Traverse City, their Michigan Apple. This doesn't have the candy flavor of that, but it's like the LaCroix of Jolly Ranchers and has really harsh ethanol to go with it. It mimics a spiciness, but it's not spicy at all. I don't get a lot of baking spice on this. Benchmark bourbon, from the Sazerac Company and Buffalo Trace Distillery [ 4], is a great bourbon at a great price point. The Benchmark Bourbon recipe is a blend of rye whiskey that was created by the McAfee brothers (James, Robert, and George). This label is another example of how the distillery has honored its history.

How often do we see a brand go from one “bottom shelf” bourbon to a whole new line of bourbons all at once? Not very often. But here they are, the McAfee Brothers Benchmark Bourbon Collection; 5 new bourbons all released at the same time. Beginning in late 2020, these bourbons became available, but only in Indiana. I’m not sure of the rationale behind that, but Buffalo Trace/ Sazerac generally knows what they are doing. Since then, their distribution has become much more widespread. However, at the time, this new set of bourbons intrigued me, so I drove to Indiana to get them! Benchmark Bourbon Was Named After The McAfee Brothers In this personal blog, I share my knowledge and insights on Whisky, Whiskey & Bourbon and other spirits, drawing from my 30 years of extensive experience. With almost the same mash as other Buffalo Trace spirits, expect a leathery yet fruity and sugary tasting note with a lingering finish. Interesting Facts History Nose:Sweet and fruity notes like cherries, raspberries and grenadine syrup. The fruits are given extra depth with stronger vanilla and caramelscents. It should be inviting to both inexperienced and experienced drinkers alike. I even smell some of the oakthat surely come from the older bourbon barrels in every batch. Today, we're reviewing Benchmark Single Barrel, the third whiskey in the new collection of special-edition bourbons bearing the Benchmark name. After last week's Benchmark Small Batch let us down, we're hoping the brand can rebound in a big way this week.

Proof. The aroma of vanilla and oak gives way to delightful hints of caramel, leather, and honey. 2) Benchmark Bonded So, how do these bourbons compare in taste and how do they rank? Let's find out. 6) Benchmark Old No. 8 Brand It blends exceptionally well with Coke and is considered one of the top choices for mixed drinks, alongside Caribbean rums. Compared with regular Benchmark: the flavors are similar but are more full and pronounced in the Small Batch. The dryness at the end also is more apparent. Many of the others in the line offer more complexity or more pronounced pleasant flavors. I would suggest that if this is the only one of the Benchmark line that have tried, and you loved it, then great! However, if you didn’t, you might find it worthwhile to try one of the others in the Benchmark Bourbon line. The complex flavors of citrus and caramel complement the notes of baking spice and oak. Three whiskey-based liqueurs of 70 U.S. proof (35% alcohol by volume) also carry the brand name – one with apple flavoring, one with peach flavoring and the third with brown sugar flavoring. [2] [3] History [ edit ] It is tough to think of another distillery that sells better products – from top to bottom – than the Buffalo Trace brand. They are practically the gold standardof the industry. How do we know that? Because every Buffalo Trace product they put out seems to be instantly allocated. The finish is barely noticeable, leaving behind a fiery and peppery sensation, with a faint trace of citrus and an unexpected similarity to glue. Nose:Coming fresh off of my glass of Benchmark No. 8, thenoseon this glass of Small Batch immediately smells miles ahead. The same notes are present, but all of them feel stronger – like a real bourbon!

Instead, this bottle seems to incorporate all of the best traits of a Buffalo Trace product while somehow skipping over the bad that could come with a young, high proof bourbon.McAfee’s Benchmark Old No. 8 Bourbon is definitely my least favorite regular release from Buffalo Trace. My all-time least favorite BT release was the rice bourbon, but that was a special edition experiment and is among the worst whiskeys I’ve ever had. Thankfully the McAfee’s Benchmark Old No. 8 Bourbon is nothing like it and that’s something we can all be happy about. This review has been a long time coming because I’ve been procrastinating. I have thought favorably of the other bottles in the lineup as a whole because of how good they have been for the price. Will my thoughts remain the same for the Single Barrel? Let’s take a look. I sampled this neat in a glencairn.
