However, if the bleeding is heavy or if you have a dry socket, you may need to use gauze for a little longer than the norm. Biting down on gauze applies pressure to the extraction site, which helps the blood clot and prevents bleeding. Dentists often recommend removing your wisdom teeth if they’re currently causing dental problems, or if they think wisdom teeth may cause problems in the future. Once the bleeding has subsided, we’ll usually remove the gauze and instruct you to continue the healing process at home. Most important, the patient was instructed to place the gauze just before commencement of the scan so that the gauze would not become overly saturated with saliva, which would result in a T2 hyperintense appearance and possibly interfere with the final reading and reporting of the MR imaging ( Fig 3).

In the past, dermatologic surgeons from our group have championed the use of sterile gauze for retraction during surgery in webbed spaces[ 5] and cotton-tip applicators for a variety of tasks during MMS. The first sign it’s time to stop using gauze is when the bleeding has stopped and the gauze you’re changing out remains clean and dry. Sutures/‘Stitches’: Your dentist may find it necessary to place sutures (stitches) after your tooth has been removed.Look at the wound directly for 20–30 seconds, using a flashlight and spoon handle (as a retractor) if needed. If you are too “shy” to brush and rinse, then it increases the likelihood of the development of a postoperative wound infection and pain that worsens.

During this recovery time, your normal caloric intake may be reduced because it is difficult to eat.

Discoloration or Bruising: The development of black, blue, green or yellow discoloration is due to bruising beneath the tissues. The first two days after surgery are generally the most uncomfortable and there is usually some swelling.

This might wash out the blood clot (a clump of blood that prevents too much bleeding) and delay healing. If nausea and/or vomiting is experienced after the surgery, then don’t eat or take anything by mouth for an hour (including prescribed medications). If you see that blood “pools up” in the socket, then a new pressure gauze should be placed, and the patient should bite down for another hour. While removing lesions from the cutaneous upper lip, philtrum, columella, infratip, and/or inferior alar margin, place two to three stacked and half-folded 4” × 4” sterile gauze pads between the patient's lips and ask them to keep them in place with mouth closed. The tighter the gauze is rolled, the more layers there are for the blood to soak into, which means you’ll have to change the gauze less often.
