Edward Hadley (Open University, UK) considers Hughes's 'Pennine Sequences',Remains of Elmet and Elmet .

After the publication of her first books— Rebecca the Lurcher (1973) and The Oldest Road: An Exploration of the Ridgeway (1975), co-authored with J.R.L. Anderson—she was a prolific publisher, working mainly in the landscape tradition to great acclaim and becoming the nation's best-known landscape photographer. The Oldest Road sold over 25,000 copies. [4] Her work was informed by the sense of ecological crisis present in late 1970s and 1980s England. [ citation needed] Anderson, A.O. (1922). Early Sources of Scottish History: AD 500–1286. Vol.I. Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd. p.441.The Library's buildings remain fully open but some services are limited, including access to collection items. We're From this evidence it appears that Elmet was one of a number of Sub-Roman Brittonic realms in the Hen Ogledd – what is now northern England and southern Scotland – during the Early Middle Ages. Other kingdoms included Rheged, the Kingdom of Strathclyde ( Ystrad Clud), Bryneich and Gododdin. It is unclear how Elmet came to be established, though it has been suggested that it may have been created from a larger kingdom ruled by the semi-legendary Coel Hen. The historian Alex Woolf suggests that the region of Elmet had a distinct tribal identity in pre-Roman times and that this re-emerged after Roman rule collapsed. https://www.nature.com/news/uk-mapped-out-by-genetic-ancestry-1.17136 citing Leslie, S., Winney, B., Hellenthal, G. et al. A reluctant parting, here is the list of equipment that was sold, described in her own words. But after dispensing with a few choice words on humble journos (for not turning up to see her latest exhibition of digital work), she relents a little, and explains what’s kept her away from the hills these last few years.

Godwin's archive, including approximately 11,000 exhibition prints, the entire contents of her studio, and correspondence with some of her subjects, was given to the British Library [3] Publications [ edit ] I have watched the mills of the region and their attendant chapels die. Within the last fifteen years the end In addition, whilst evidence that Hermetic myths have directly influenced Hughes’ handling of Remains of Elmet is to be found throughout the sequence, his opening poem, ‘Where The Mothers’ ( ROE.10) provides an early and clear example of this. Using rhythms and sounds which capture the wildness of the elements as they are commonly experienced on the pictured moors, Hughes describes the disembodied souls as they, like the wind and the rain, howl through heaven and Pour down onto earth ROE.23); and the Blake poem which this echoes might well serve to summarise Hughes’ healing purpose in this sequence: Hear the voice of the Bard! Remains of Elmet, in fact, is far less simple than Hughes’ published statements about it would have us believe. There is a metaphysical aspect to it which has been almost overlooked; and, as in Cave Birds, it has a transforming alchemical purpose. It also displays as many congruencies of thought and belief between Hughes and Blake as were evident in Cave Birds. It is a sequence not only by virtue of the poems’ common geographical location, but also because of a consistent underlying cosmology and because it represents, as reviewer Richard Murphy perceptively realised at the time of its publication, Hughes’ attempt to “ re–sacralise” the world through poetry 8.The Calder valley, west of Halifax, was the last ditch of Elmet, the last British Celtic kingdom to fall to About 1 in 4 poems evoked a response in me, the others didn't do anything for me at all or just made me go "Uh?". But those few lines/word pictures astonished me in their ability to evoke a sense of place. The people of Elmet survived as a distinctly recognized Brittonic Celtic group for centuries afterwards in what later became the smaller area of the West Riding of Yorkshire then West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. [1] Geography [ edit ] Landmarks is a glorious celebration of the work of Fay Godwin, one of the UK ’s most respected and influential photographers. Drawing on the whole body of her photographic practice of the last thirty years, it includes literary portraits, humorous snapshots, and rural and urban landscapes, as well as the intimate series of colour images, Glassworks, that marks the most recent evolution of her work. Poet Simon Armitage introduces the book, and an essay by photographic historian Roger Taylor explores and illuminates both Godwin’s career and her approach to photography. Godwin appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs programme in 2002. Here’s what she chose as her eight favourite pieces of music.
