About this deal

Wine would be poured on his head, or a man would hold him by the ears while another spread his face with mustard. Bringing their own unique and counter-balanced personalities to proceedings they ask questions such as: what is happiness? Still a little off balance I looked about me, saw obscure dark eyes and incomprehensible faces, crumbling walls scribbled with mysterious graffiti, an armed policeman sitting on the Town Hall steps, and a photograph of Marx in a barber’s window.

When Billy can’t find the informant, he wonders if Kate is secretly harboring her, since the two grew close during Kate's weeks undercover. His other works include The Voyage of Magellan (1948), The Firstborn (1964), I Can't Stay Long (1975), and Two Women (1983).The driving force of the novel is simply the language itself and the slow, but the promise (by the blurb), of the ending at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The Spain he travels to is ancient and incredibly exotic although the people he meets are familiar in many ways.

Towards the end of the book, near the end of 1935, Lee finds himself in Castillo, on the Mediterranean coast and becomes aware of a split in the people, and trouble brewing. Some of the detail here and the quality of Lee's writing, reveals a fascinating view of England in the mid 1930's, but ultimately leaves you wanting more. If this were architecture, Hemmingway would be great and imposing but unadorned Romanesque and Lee would be flowery gold leafed Baroque. His most famous work was an autobiographical trilogy which consisted of Cider with Rosie (1959), As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) and A Moment of War (1991). Not as well known as 'Cider With Rosie' this book is the second in Laurie Lee's autobiographical trilogy. But, deciding to travel further a field and knowing only the Spanish phrase for 'Will you please give me a glass of water? Then I packed and went up on to the shining deck, and the Spanish sun rose too, and for the first time in my life I saw, looped round the bay, the shape of a foreign city. Even when bodies appear in the streets and destroyers begin firing from the coastlines, Lee never appears particularly afraid or cautious, the narrative moves on with its gentle, matter-of-fact manner.
