I don't think they're worth teaching to my family or to new players, but I also enjoy using them when I don't have to explain the rules. The jury praised the tactics, clarity without "the burden of any heavy game mechanics", and replayability through "the variable combination of royal objectives". The campfire burning not too far away and the snow collected here and there really sucks you into the scene and you can already imagine the chill in the air.

When my family liked our initial games so much that they wanted to keep playing (and started keeping colored pencils handy for online game night, just in case), I bought more sheets and split them among us, and I'll probably need to get more still. One side is meant for more advanced play and features a large chasm that significantly restricts the available space. All of these decisions are good trade-offs, and there is rarely a "right" answer, at least when the game begins.

The theme did appeal though (we had 4 cats at one time, now we just have 1) and being a polyomino game it had potential but the icing on the cake were the family rules. Not only can ambushes mess up your plans, but empty spaces adjacent to monsters in each scoring round will cost you points. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, a monster appears and you’ve suddenly got this thing sitting in the middle of your map sheet threatening to eat away at your point total. Our ultimate guide to board game cafes has everything you need to know about what a board game cafe is, or how to find one in your area!

This scoring system is very similar in nature to Isle of Skye, so if you’ve ever played that game you’ll grasp this concept immediately. It would be great if it weren’t for the monsters being so ridiculously over done… the other thing that happens a lot is getting ruins spaces right after the monsters where you can’t fill in the spaces properly: Randomly and Occasionally would be fine but this is almost every game. Well, in the same way as the original, you flip over explore cards with terrain types and a shape (or two) to draw onto your map.

If a monster falls in this area at any point, it is destroyed and crossed out, meaning it has no impact. I took a few liberties when I presented the story at the beginning of this piece because the story in the book really doesn’t make a lot of sense. Every round, an ambush card is shuffled into the deck, and when you draw one, players pass their maps to their neighbors. This includes regular gamers and those who are new to the scene and they have all enjoyed it and appreciate it really quickly. If an Ambush card is drawn, take note of the direction of the arrow shown on the card and the shape shown. Then players collectively choose which side to play on, one with a giant chasm in the middle, the other with a plethora of ruins and mountain spaces. As long as they can see the terrain cards and the scoring cards then you can have as many people play as you have sheets. The most important thing that Heroes adds to the game, in my estimation, is even more objective cards--four of each type.
