A must have for anyone who loves the Manics and those who like the newer releases dive in and grab the true essence of this band. Second album from this Walesians content excelent songs with acid protest stile caracteristic from they. The band privileged long guitar riffs and the drums feel more present and loud in the final mix of the album. We haven’t always been the most complementary about this album in the past, but with hindsight it was a strange and curious record with many fan’s favourites on it. Against that, the remaster is less congested (for example, it's easier to hear the separation of the guitar tracks) and has a better foundation in the low frequencies.

Gold Against the Soul is the second studio album by Welsh alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers.I was therefore keenly anticipating the follow-up and didn’t have to wait very long as the Dave Eringa-produced Gold Against The Soul arrived about 18 months after the first album and delivered three great singles in ‘From Despair To Where’, ‘La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)’ and ‘Roses in the Hospital’ (as well as the ‘Life Becoming A Landslide’ EP).

At least they learned from the mistake - the Know Your Enemy reissue was vastly superior to this in terms of value, content and sound. There’s an amazing batch of demos that are quite revealing – some of them are really confused versions of what ended up on the album.Had this on cd for many years and decided to get the vinyl eventually as I recently did with the Holy Bible. Scream To A Sigh (La Tristesse Durera)', also sounds quite majestic, with thoughtful subject matter, lamenting over the neglect of war heroes, the title referencing the final line of Van Gogh's suicide note. He highlighted the "confused-nihilist persona internalised and fucked up to the point of collapse, while the riffs just keep on playing. It has often been said that 'Sleepflower' was the Manics attempt at a grunge song, and if so, it was a very valiant effort, since it sounds very much like a Nirvana song. Among more favourable reviews, Stuart Maconie of Select praised the album as "a mammoth development even from their excellent debut" and "almost without exception terrific", [22] while Melody Maker remarked that the band had "stayed beautiful".
