He claimed that a creature, a powerful evil force that was conjured by a Celtic tribe, could be disarmed by his “power of imagination”. It’s a long road from here to any of these projects appearing on a screen near you, and they all might fall at any one of the numerous obstacles. So far I’m the only person to have written about it because it was unbelievably difficult to track down the people involved, some of whom are no longer with us or who have vanished. What they found there was far, far worse than their wildest imaginings…and it threatened their sanity and ultimately their lives.

She says, “Bill’s paintings have never been exhibited, which I feel is sad, as he was an unusually talented artist. As they transverse the country, we get to see the chaos with Hunt tearing the sky and a dragon firebombing the highway. The first episode on April 19, 10 pm, is a chilling account of the Rich family’s terrifying experiences in an isolated farmhouse, which I wrote about in my non-fiction book Testimony. We felt like the sequence of events we presented gave the most representative sense of everything that happened. For me, one of the most interesting aspects of reading non-fiction by one of my favourite fiction authors, is picking up on the themes that have informed his more recent work. They sweep by on the surface, terrifying and driving the plot, but it’s what they really mean that is truly horrifying. A dozen people of varying degrees of credulity, differing ages, sex and religious persuasion are convinced something beyond the bounds of reason happened at Heol Fanog between November 1989 and June 1995. It’s simple: “So much happened in that story that inevitably we left some stuff out,” explains executive producer Joel Wilson. The 14-year-old boy lived with Bill and Liz for several years before he was moved to a boarding school after the couple became convinced Laurence was possessed. After literally hundreds of requests from listeners of the hit BBC Podcast The Witch Farm, I’m pleased to say the new paperback edition of Testimony is now available.

As you can see above, this one features a new cover – a photo of the truly terrifying Heol Fanog from the time when Bill and Liz Rich were reluctant residents. And if you can spread the word that the paperback is now available again, please do…if only for the sake of my in-box. he gained a degree in Economic History [1] and went on to become a journalist, working for some of Britain's leading newspapers and magazines including The Times, [3] The Independent, and Marie Claire. These books have made The Times best-seller list, so as people are keen to keep reading them, I feel an obligation to keep writing them.Which, let’s face it, is a brilliantly bold get-out if you’re struggling to raise an unruly teenager. A story not just of the supernatural, but of raw human emotions as ordinary people struggled to cope in the face of madness. I’ve tried to remain open-minded about supernatural events and it strikes me that in documenting this account Mark Chadbourn does too. The author is obviously knowledgeable on mythology, and this information adds a lot of depth to this novel. He is a two-time winner of the prestigious British Fantasy Award, for his novella The Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke based on the painting by Richard Dadd, and for his short story, Whisper Lane.

It’s all a matter of perception, which is one of the themes The Haunting of Hill House plays with so effectively.Somehow, though, we persist in maintaining the illusion that in this age of high technology there can be no such thing as the supernatural. It includes plenty of people who won’t make it into the podcast because they’ve subsequently died or disappeared.

But mostly praise the decision to reclaim horror for all those people who prefer a little meat on old bones. I went in thinking I’d probably at the least end up with a book about the psychology of living in a house believed to be haunted. But at its heart, Testimony is a human story, about two people who found themselves at the heart of something they couldn’t explain, trapped in a place they no longer wanted to be, and preyed upon by those allegedly offering help. The Grant Mansion in Beacon Hill is said to be haunted and the most obvious place to find the truth.
