When she joins Malory Towers, she’s looking forward to getting up to stuff with her sister, but then Darrell becomes Head of Lower School. Izuka Hoyle is brilliant as the principled pal with a hot head but a heart firmly in the right place – her Darrell Rivers is entirely the best kind of friend a girl like poor Mary Lou Atkinson needs. But the period element is important – it’s about finding a balance between the warmer, nostalgic glow of the original Blyton world and the lived-experiences of the modern viewer. I’m always so grateful to learn from our talented directors Bruce McDonald and Tracey Rooney, whilst making wonderful memories with my best friends. You've no idea, Mary-Lou, just how hard it was to score those songs of yours just the right degree of pianissimo so that I didn't drown out your singing, but still carried the tune across the hall.What we’re left with as the grown ups fade into the distance is an unlikely dynamic of a mini society created and maintained by young people – and there’s an inherent fascination with how young people might find their way through unchartered territory when left to their own devices. These people changed the political landscape in their focus on care, compassion and the common good.
