About this deal

Since many others seem to have enjoyed it, I feel a little guilty for DNFing this one, but I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't do anything that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. It’s incredible that these people, who have been so real to me for years, will become real to other people. C’è almeno un momento in cui ho fatto fatica a trattenere le lacrime (non ci sono riuscito), e c’è almeno un colpo di scena notevole.

Girl A is extremely bleak, but its bleakness never becomes overpowering and the story is gripping, so the pages keep flying even when things get extremely dark. Recommended for: Fans of true crime, survivor stories, and psychological profiles (*not* psychological suspense or thrillers though). Not necessarily a huge con of the book, but she kinda just breezed back in after literally experiencing the worst moments of her life there. Everything about this was haunting and I really enjoyed the way Dean captured the potential psychological traumas and post-rescue trials one might face when in a situation such as this. I appreciate the opportunity to have an advanced copy of this work; however, I think the need for further editing had an increased impact on my enjoyment.

It comes with excitable reports of huge international sales and an insistence that it will be everywhere. Alexandria Gracie has escaped her parents, who have been shot dead after keeping Lex and her siblings in abusive captivity.

It's been easy enough to avoid her parents--her father never made it out of the House of Horrors he created, and her mother spent the rest of her life behind bars.

Deep psychological problems run rampant through the family and as always it is the children who are scared. Sure, the father is of course a religious lunatic and the mother is a cowed baby machine but how can even such people view their emaciated children on a daily basis and think everything is copacetic? First, I don’t know about the ethics of this thing – you may remember Lullaby by Leila Slimani from 2016. Lex, a workaholic high flying over-achiever has built walls around her to cope with the horror of her past.

One uses the word of God and her good looks to get through life, another is in a mental institution from so many years of damage, and one it seems turned out just as bad as her father and uses the past to his advantage.

It is a dive into the deprived depths of human nature and the consequences for the people who are victims in that. And she doesn’t want to think about her identity as Girl A: the girl who escaped, the eldest sister who freed her older brother and four younger siblings. Lex, Girl A, is the survivor and savior of her siblings from their parents’ home where they were starved and incarcerated. It is a powerful piece of work, but that does not mean to say I enjoyed reading it, as the shifting timelines made it all the more difficult to connect with.

But of course it will be something more profound, compelling and challenging struggle they have been expecting. She’s an adult woman who has done her best to move forward, but the scars of her childhood are still visible in her thoughts and demeanor, especially in the way she remembers her mother. They are then separated into different adoptive families once the truth comes out about their biological mom/dad. I didn’t see why the adult Lex had to be a lawyer, as the details of her job and colleagues are uninteresting and contribute nothing to the story. Although the house itself is not described in any great detail, the atmosphere is there in abundance as unsettling events from Alexandra’s past are relayed with a prevailing gloom.Girl A (Alexandra/Lex) was the oldest girl in a family of 9, where the parents went from isolating the children to keeping them chained to their beds, living in poverty and squalor, before she finally managed to escape and alert the authorities. Lex, who narrates, is a successful lawyer who hopes to turn their “house of horrors” experience into a force for good.
