It's safe to say that nails have a rich history as they've laid the foundation work for our modern construction techniques. But although nails haven't changed much in appearance, their fundamentals have been adapted somewhat. In today's age, we have different types of nails to do different jobs. Collings wrote: “After the concrete has set sufficiently, the forms are removed, but due to the fact that the heads of the nails are driven into the wood, it’s extremely difficult to remove the nails without damage being done to the forms, which frequently have to be broken and even smashed to pieces in their removal, thus causing a considerable waste of material and loss of time.” Nails hammered through or up against the grain of the wood secure the nail position. Driving nails against the grain will make them come out easier. It is easier to drive nails into harder wood or into the end of a piece of wood if you drill a pilot hole first. The D in nail sizes indicates “penny,” and they’re pronounced as such: 10D is pronounced “ten-penny.” Originally, the term indicated how many pennies a carpenter would have to pay for 100 nails of a specific length. The longer the length, the more pennies they’d have to pay for the lot.

The disadvantages of paper as a collation material can vary between your equipment, the quality of the paper and the environment you are working in. If all the conditions for paper collation are not correct, its collation paper can tear before the nail is driven in all the way. Also called annular ring nails, ring shank nails have crevices on the shank that give them additional grip. They are versatile and can be used for framing construction projects, temporary builds, and more. #2. Can I Substitute One Nail for Another?Zinc plating or electro-galvanization. When steel nails are dipped in a zinc acidic bath, a thin layer of zinc is left behind. This provides some protection against rust, though these nails are still usually intended for indoor use. One walk down the fasteners aisle at a big box home improvement store will prove that nail varieties abound. However, some nails are more common than others, and this guide will break down some of the different types of nails. In most cases, there are three main parts of a nail. These three parts include the head, the shank, and the point. Each of these parts serves a purpose. Square - Square masonry nails are very similar in most qualities to the round nail, only differentiating in shape. They will both be made from hardened steel with a rustproof zinc coating.

Smooth Shank - The most basic, but also the most common due to its low price point, is the smooth shank nail. A smooth shank is named that way because, as the namesake, it has a completely smooth shank. Also used on drywalls and gypsum board, the thin layer of cement on these coated nails heats up from the friction when they are nailed in place, increasing their staying power. Vinyl Specialized nails are often graded using the 2d to 60d scale, though they may also be sold indicating their length in inches or some other dimension. Choosing the right size nail for your woodOne of the main advantages of panel pins lay in the size of the head. When driven flush with the wood, the panel pin becomes very difficult to spot, allowing for neat joint work.

Collated nails are nails that are loaded into a strip for use with construction equipment, typically nail guns. There are several types of nail guns which will use different types of nails and strips. It's unfortunately not one size fits all nail solution. It all comes down to convenience, cost, and performance. Duplex Nails are readily available in a multitude of styles and sizes and are sold everywhere. Duplex Screws are only available from select distributors, come in sizes 1-1/4, 1-5/8, 1-3/4, and 2-3/4 inches. They cost more than Duplex Nails. In timed comparison studies, Duplex Screws outperformed Duplex Nails by a wide margin. During three workdays, a pair of concrete-form setters built a 50 x 50 lineal-foot form. One worker used only Duplex Nails and the other worker used Duplex Screws.Longer is not necessarily better; the longer the nail, the greater the danger of splitting the wood. Diameter

In addition to different nail shapes, the different materials used to make nails and their coatings (or sheathings) make them best suited to particular conditions and situations. There are a few different metals commonly used to make nails. Steel

The entries for types of nails give the number of nails per pound for each size. From this information and the number of nails needed, the number of pounds required can be calculated. Finish Nails are used in a variety of construction tasks, for box making, furniture building, etc. Though not as tightly defined as machine screws and nuts which must mate with one another, nails are standardized to some degree, particularly those used for structural purposes. The following article tabulates some of the standard nail sizes and briefly describes the wide range of nails available through nail length charts. Standard Nail Sizes/Nail Measurements Whether you opt for Duplex Nails or Duplex Screws, both offer advantages over traditional nails when it comes to building temporary structures. With their dual-head design, these fasteners make installation and removal a breeze, saving time, effort, and potentially preventing costly damage. So the next time you embark on a construction project, consider the convenience and safety that Duplex Nails and Screws can bring. Nails can be made from a variety of metals, including ordinary steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, or aluminum. Or, nails can be galvanized or plated with zinc or another metal. Most construction nails are steel, often with some kind of surface coating. Many construction nails are coated with a thin layer of vinyl, which acts as a lubricant when driving the nail. Nails can also be coated with phosphate to improve their holding power. A nail that is uncoated in any way is often called a "bright" nail. Zinc is always the coating of choice when you want to delay corrosion on nails. Although zinc will still be subjected to wear and tear, you won’t have any problems with rusting for decades.
