About this deal

Hot Deal: Save an Extra 5% - 10% on Select Items With Payboo at B&H – Canon EOS R5, R3, and Many Other Items Included! Above: Zooming-in for a closer look tells the same story as before though, with both new RF models out-performing the old EF lens as you’d expect. Also notice the focus fall-off on my beard and hat. Again the EF version looks a tad out-of-focus, but this was the best result I could achieve on multiple attempts. Again my sample may be at fault and your mileage may vary, but old lenses designed for film SLRs are unlikely to match modern lenses on high resolution digital bodies. The USPS love stamps shared above have an image area that measures 1.05 x 0.77" (26.67 x 19.558mm), and the overall individual stamp size is 1.19 x 0.91" (30.226 x 23.114mm). As previously mentioned, Samyang is the manufacturer of this lens, and it is available in Samyang or Rokinon brands.

The Canon lens uses 82mm filters vs. 77mm and features a focus limiter switch, control ring, better AF system, and better build quality. The Canon RF mount version of the Rokinon AF 85mm F1.4 Lens is compatible with all Canon EOS R-series cameras.

The reality is that many who use this lens will never use manual focus, and for those, this factor doesn't matter. The Sigma lens has slightly less peripheral shading at f/1.4 and slightly more at narrow apertures, primarily in the corners. Although it has a plastic barrel, the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 feels very durable. Additionally, the textured surface of the focus ring gives the lens a very nice feel. Fortunately, Canon and Sony take care of that omission with IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization) in their latest mirrorless cameras.

The Samyang 85mm f/1.4 certainly has plenty of sharpness and contrast to keep up with expectations but it also has some fun character. Specifically, I really like the slightly desaturated color and fun lens flare. Especially in a portrait lens, character like this sparks creativity and fun. And you also have to see that the sony 85 is a great lens for the price. The sony is even cheaper than a tamron 85 1.8. If you compare the sony/canon 85 1.4 with the zeiss 85 1.8 in terms of price, then it's much easier to justify the 1.4 price difference. If I had to choose between the Zeiss 85 1.8 or the Sony 85 1.4, then it would be a much harder decision. Connect a Rokinon AF lens to a computer for firmware updates and lens performance calibration using the Rokinon Lens Station and Lens Manager Software. Wide open, it does have a fair amount of vignetting, but that is easily correctable in post. But quite honestly for certain types of images it actually looks great. Stop it down to 1.8 and its almost gone. As the aperture narrows, the entrance pupil size is reduced, and the mechanical vignetting absolves with the shapes becoming rounder — considerably rounder at only f/2.

Distortion is so negligible it’s just not going to be an issue with real-world shooting, even with subjects exhibiting lots of straight edges or lines. Chromatic aberration is also very well managed, with only the tiniest amount of fringing evident along some high-contrast edges when the image is significantly enlarged. As with distortion, this isn’t going to be problematic with normal shooting (compared to test charts). This lens is fully weather-sealed to help protect it against dust, light rain and snow, a commendable design decision given the low price tag that it commands.
