About this deal

In 1883, after a series of patent disputes with Thomas Edison, Swan's strong patents in Britain led to the merger of their companies into the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company, commonly known as "Ediswan". Ediswan became a significant manufacturer of light bulbs and other electrical products, contributing to Britain's emerging electrical industry.

Also, I needed more information and description about the interior of the lighthouse to make the story come alive and there was so much character jumping that, at times, it was difficult to know what was going on and where a sudden character introduction took place. As past and present collide, the secrets hiding on the ocean floor begin to surface. Can Mari find the answers she is looking for—and at what price? It is in the realm of electric lighting that Swan's contributions to British heritage are most clearly seen. The incandescent light bulb, which Swan independently developed around the same time as Thomas Alva Edison in the United States, was a transformative innovation. With his bulb, Swan ushered in a new era of electric illumination, replacing the unreliable and hazardous gas lighting of the time. Swan. J.W. Swan's electric light Transactions, North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers 30, 1881, 149–159 In 1864, Swan patented the transfer process for making carbon prints, a permanent photographic process. By adding the transfer step, Swan was able easily to make photographs with a full tonal range. a b c d "Death Of Sir Joseph Swan". The Times. No.40535. 28 May 1914. p.12. Gale CS202441404 . This story was a middlin' tale that could have been better. In the beginning, there was much talk about the closeness of the five children, but little was told about the kids themselves. I bring this up because the friendships are alluded to as the story progresses, but little is made of it except that they spent their childhood together. First and foremost, thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for giving me access to this ARC!Swan's strong patents in Great Britain led, in 1883, to the two competing companies merging to exploit both Swan's and Edison's inventions, [28] with the establishment of the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company. Known commonly as "Ediswan", the company sold lamps made with a cellulose filament that Swan had invented in 1881, while the Edison Company continued using bamboo filaments outside of Britain. In 1892, General Electric (GE) began exploiting Swan's patents to produce cellulose filaments, until they were replaced in 1904 by a GE developed "General Electric Metallized" (GEM) baked cellulose filaments. I was completely immersed in the story while reading. The stunning cover with promises of a sweeping, emotional tale of the mysterious circumstances of a lighthouse, its keeper trying to save it, and present day divers tying to unravel the mystery of it all - just captured my salty heart the minute I laid eyes on it. ⁣

Swan continued to develop his invention and in 1880 his friend William Armstrong's house at Cragside, near Rothbury in Northumberland, was the first private home to be lit by electric light bulbs. The Cragside type lamp became the first light bulb to be made in large numbers in 1881, when Swan established the world's first light bulb factory at Benwell in Newcastle. In 1883 Swan teamed up with Thomas Edison of the USA, who also had just made a successful electric light bulb.
