About this deal

Nose: Smoke comes in a sophisticated way. Sweet peat and light fruity and salty notes. Red wine with plums. Nose: Crunchie bars, Turkish Delight rosiness, rich salty caramel, touches of dried fruit. Quite light and fresh for a Port finished whisky. It was a difficult journey, often made in horrendous weather conditions and loss of life was not uncommon…

Port Ruighe is a port cask-finished single malt from Talisker, the oldest distillery on the Isle of Skye. It’s named after Portree, the largest town on the island and once-bustling port, frequented by ships that carried tradable goods all over the world. In 1960, the distillery burned down and was silent until 1962 while it was being rebuilt. A decade later the maltings closed and the distillery began getting its requirements from Glen Ord. With its smoky profile, it’s no surprise that I’ll be recommending food pairings such as kippers and smoked salmon. I realise that this may be a bit strange if you don’t usually enjoy whisky with a meal. However, I absolutely love bringing these two native products together in a single experience.

Palate: Syrupy body. Very hot, at first, but resolves slowly into heavy notes of rhubarb, smoked salt, earthy peat, and caramel malt. The port is more readily detectable here, with light red fruits and a slight tartness. The long finish becomes very smoky, dark and sweet with some earthy notes at the death. Talisker 1998/2017 (56.6%, OB for Keepers Of The Quaich, cask #6829, refill sherry butt, 618 bottles) - by Angus - 040420 The Talisker Port Ruighe (pronounced as Port Tree) has been on the market for about 7 years now, but today is actually the first time I will taste it. I’m not much of a fan of Port finishes, so maybe this is why I didn’t really have this single malt on my radar. However, a few weeks ago I spotted this bottle in my father’s whisky cabinet, so I secretly stole a sample so that I could try it and of course, review it. First released in 2013, Port Ruighe was the second NAS bottle from Talisker (Talisker Storm was the first) and since then many others followed, such as the Talisker 57 North for instance. Port Ruighe has matured in both American and European refill oak casks before being finished in Ruby Port casks. Bottled at a strength of 45.8% ABV. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. The wine shipped from Oporto became known simply as Port and found an eager market in the British Isles. It was shipped in barrels and since there was no reason to return those barrels to Portugal, other uses were found for them. In Scotland, distillers began using them to store, transport and mature their spirit. Hence, the long association between Scotch whisky and the Port wine of the Douro Valley in Portugal. Comment: This is definitely not your regular Talisker – loads of oily sweetness as well as floral note that came through as Turkish Delight for me (specifically Fry’s). Interesting and different but not really my cup of tea. If you like wine finished whisky, then this will be right up your street.
