About this deal

It was limited to just 50 bottles and it is believed that the majority, which went to various local bars, were opened and enjoyed soon after they landed. A second release of a further 50 bottles was offered in 2007 and then, in 2011, a final 150 bottles. Yamazaki also does the occasional Sherry Cask, which was named in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible as the “World’s Best Whisky” in 2013; various vintage-dated whiskies; and, on occasion, others such as a 10-Year-Old and even a 50-Year-Old. The Hakushu 12 Year Old is a peated expression comprised of meticulously selected malt whiskies, all aged for a minimum of 12 years in various casks. Hakushu is Suntory's mountain forest distillery, making their expressions with exceptionally pure granite-filtered water and maturing the liquid in a lush, forested microclimate. The illustration on the bottle captures the Hakushu distillery in soft hues green, representing the surrounding forest, and it depicts Shinjiro Torii’s dream to make whisky blessed with the riches of Japanese nature and craftmanship that is still carried on today. Presented at 43% abv.

The taste is deep and multi-layered. Coconut, cranberry and butter tastes are prominent on the palate. The House of Suntory have been pioneers of Japanese whisky since 1923, when founder Shinjiro Torii built Japans first malt distillery. The birthplace of Japanese single malt, Yamazaki is inspired by traditional Scottish whisky making and is influenced by its surrounding nature and climate. Torii believed that the craftsmanship and mastery required to create single malt whisky appropriately reflected the values of the Japanese people and culture, whilst a unique climate, fresh water sources, and natural materials available would combine well in the pursuit of a world-leading whisky. He certainly wasn't wrong! At Yamazaki, there is a unique misty climate of varying temperature and humidity. Here, the master blenders pursue their founder’s legacy through the art of Tsukuriwake, or the diversity in the making. Through the diverse fermentation process, distillation and maturation techniques, the signature Yamazaki 12 year old single malt Japanese whisky was birthed. Suntory is one of the oldest whisky companies in Japan. Started in 1899 by Torii Shinjiro, it is now Japan’s largest and most recognizable producer of quality whisky. In 1984, the Yamazaki 12 year old single malt was introduced to the market. It was the very first single malt whisky to be seriously marketed in Japan.Expect rich and elegant aromas of dark cherry and ripe peach, with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate holds subtle spice, with notes of fragrant Japanese incense leading to a long and lingering finish full of clove and sandalwood. The 12-Year-Old is a wonderful whisky. Notes of honey, cinnamon, and peach with a hint of toffee. Complex. This is great stuff. The merest whiff of white chocolate. There is a notable spirity character, but it is so well balanced and delightfully smooth. Terrific length. For a score, an easy 96. The nose opens with notes of green apple, fragrant jasmine and subtle smoke, which lead to a sweet palate of chocolate-chip biscuits and vanilla. The finish is reasonably dry, with more sweet and gentle smoke. Yamazaki 18 Year Old Suntory 100th Anniversary Release

In 2003, the 12-Year-Old became the first Japanese whisky to win gold at the International Spirits Challenge. It was the start of a cavalcade of bling for its whiskies. Whisky reviews for Yamazaki 12-year-old

On the nose, fruity notes of peach, pineapple, grapefruit, clove and candied orange with a hint of vanilla waft through the whisky glass. There is also a hint of Mizunara or Japanese oak, of which the whisky has sat in for 12 years. Success eventually came when Shinjiro Torii launched the Kakubin label in 1937. No Yamazaki whisky appeared until its first single malt in 1984 thanks to Shinjiro Torii’s son, Keizo Saji, the distillery’s second master blender.

Suntory, the owner of Yamazaki and a number of other leading Japanese whiskies, has discontinued its Hibiki 17-Year-Old (which would have devastated Bill Murray’s character in Lost in Translation) and the Hakushu 12-Year-Old Single Malt. But that is the problem across the board with Japanese whisky these days. Prices have gone through the roof.
