About this deal

Sophie’s World also has strong preference for the myth of progress. The storyline of philosophy is presented as if each philosopher advanced on the theories of previous philosophers toward some future state when, if Gaarder got his way, everyone would be governed by the United Nations. Considering that this book was originally published by a Norwegian in 1994, that view of things is understandable, but that piece of the story gets a little preachy.

One day, Sophie receives a cryptic letter posing an intriguing “Who are you?” A second message soon “Where does the world come from?” It is the beginning of an unusual correspondence between our curious young heroine and her mysterious pen pal. As the questions begin to pile up, Sophie is propelled headlong into a startling adventure through the history of Western philosophy. Her search for answers will see her explore each of the major schools of thought as she tries to uncover the true nature of the letters, her secretive teacher, and above all, herself! There is not a worthwhile introductory Philosophy text for young readers. Bertrand Russell’s History of Western Philosophy might be a bit much for some people. While the “for young people” part of this premise is spelled out in the text, it’s clear that anybody, regardless of age, needs an accessible survey of the history of philosophy if one is to understand one’s world.Unlike me, who would be freaking out, Sophie is totally game to play along with these strange visitations (though by the end of this first volume she is firmly questioning the experience). Over the course of several chapters, Sophie (and the reader!) learn about the ancient Greeks and Romans, as well as the Christian and Muslim philosophers of the Middle Ages (neat to see theologians lumped in with philosophers). The book ends with the Renaissance, leaving the next volume to take up the true heavy-hitters, philosophically speaking.

If you intend to read any scientific book later, then you would see some of the philosophical ideas that is explained here, without any explanation there; as it is a primary knowledge that every scientific geek should have known about. So enter Sophie’s World. It’s written in a very light, young-adult way with short sentences and simple language. There’s nothing wrong with that if that’s what you’re after. This aspect grated on me initially, before I actually realized that it’s geared for ease of use, as it were.Well said!" said Alberto, and laughed out loud. "You are my very favorite teen girl philosopher superhero. Bravo! Bravo!" Hm," said Sofie. "On the one hand, I don't feel I'm very well written. My dialogue is flat and implausible. I'm not a particularly credible character, just a mouthpiece for the author. Of course the same goes for you." Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder is an ambitious project which falls flat - in my opinion, of course.
