About this deal

It’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which wearing a brogue would be inappropriate. They’re made in leather, suede, canvas, chelsea and chukka boots, and even slip-ons and monk straps. Brogue” is the modern-day English spelling of the Gaelic word “bròg,” which translates to “shoe.” Centuries ago, brogues were worn by Scottish and Irish peasants, and the holes (known as “broguing” or perforations) were functional, existing to allow the shoes to drain water after crossing a river or marsh. Thankfully, men have the opportunity to wear this style of shoe all year round. We’ve suggested some different styles of brogue to try based on season below.

Semi-brogues or half brogues are characterised by a straight-edged toe cap with decorative perforations and serration along the cap's edge and includes additional decorative perforations in the centre of the toe cap, called a medallion. The half brogue was first designed and produced by John Lobb Ltd. as an Oxford in the early 1900s when shoes first began to take the place of boots, in an effort to offer customers a shoe more stylish than a plain oxford, yet not as bold as a full brogue. [8] There’s a fair amount of debate as to whether brogues are appropriate with worsted suiting. A good rule of thumb is that there’s an inverse proportional relationship between ornamentation and formality. These original Scottish and Irish footwear would be perforated to allow water to escape the leather. Today, the perforations are purely decorative. Maybe you will not believe it, but the holes are there so the water could get out. Imagine living in the north of the United Kingdom, and having to walk on a rainy day through the forest with your oxfords full of water. That need of letting the water get out made some people start perforating their shoes. The rest is just an evolution from a practical feature to a trendy thing.Technically more formal than a semi-brogue, the quarter brogue is basically a cap toe in which the cap has perforations. There’s no medallion on the toe. Austerity Brogue As for the leather surface, the Scotch grain is commonly seen in a variety of finishes from a dull sheen to a brilliant shine. I own a number that I wear according to need, from my officer-issue heavy brogues with highly textured grain, to the smooth surfaced ones, to which I have given a patent-like shine and which receive earnest enquiries as to the supplier. In the United States, it’s common to refer to a brogue as a “wingtip.” While the terms overlap an overwhelming majority of the time, they are not one and the same. “Wingtip” refers to stitching on a shoe’s upper that resembles the open wings of a bird; it has nothing to do with perforations. Full brogues are less formal than semi-brogues, which are less formal than quarter brogues. The only exception to this rule is the Ghillie brogue, which is considered formal evening footwear in Scotland. I cannot comment on German dress conventions, or those adopted in North America in the 20th century, but it remains that the full brogue, along with its less ornamental kin, will always be perfectly correct with a three-piece suit of whatever material or colour. The crucial factor is the leather finish, which applies to all footwear for the same reasons.

Over time, perceptions have changed and brogues are now considered appropriate footwear in most contexts, including business.
