About this deal

A voyage with OYT South allows you to complete your Residential Project within a relaxed, informal environment where you will learn a great deal – but you will also have a fantastic time! Sally Croly leaving NEXT WEEK after 20 years! – please contribute to her leaving present or write a message for her leaving card And from the group leader: “A great experience for the group, lovely to see so many of them throw themselves into everything and get so involved. I’ve seen a lot of growth and new confidence in so many of the young people. I think they will all remember this voyage very fondly.” You can also volunteer with us ashore, or by helping with vessel maintenance. We also need help with the essential work of raising funds, to maintain our boat, pay our staff, run the charity and enable us to offer bursaries to young people who could not otherwise afford to sail with us; and we occasionally need volunteers in the office. Spread the word This seemed like an exciting prospect – and now, thanks to Alex Angel-Benscher and Vurchoo, the earrings exist and you can buy them!

For ages I’ve seen in the bulletin that Easyfundraising is a good way to raise money for charity, but I never got round to doing anything about it, and when Caz told me how easy it was, I didn’t listen. So if you want to do one thing to help Ocean Youth Trust South, do talk about us. Tell your friends and colleagues; mention us to teachers and youthworkers, and spread the word. You might bring us to someone’s attention in a way that makes all the difference. OYT South’s dedicated charity day is TOMORROW – Saturday 2 nd September – and we have a stand so please go and say hello to our team. Also this Saturday 2nd September, one of OYT South’s vice-patrons, writer and broadcaster Paul Heiney, will be giving a talk from 1pm to 1.30pm in the Events Marquee in the race village on how he sailed the Atlantic single-handed. His message is, “if I can do it, so can you. Your next big adventure starts here!” But he has promised to get in a mention for OYT South so please do come along to hear him and give him your support. MDL Marinas are seeking nominations for exceptional young people for fully-funded places on a voyage with us in the Easter holidays next year. OYT South clothing– do you want an OYT South t-shirt, hoodie or hat to wear on board, or as a souvenir afterwards?

International Paint heartily congratulates Ocean Youth Trust South on its acquisition of the sail training vessel Prolific. Prolific will inject a new dynamic into Ocean Youth Trust South and create even more opportunities for young people to benefit from the life-changing experience of training at sea. International Paint and the whole of the AkzoNobel Community look forward to continuing our longstanding support for Ocean Youth Trust and the superb work it does for children and young people.” Prolific’s accommodation includes 6 staff berths towards the stern (two pairs and two single cabins); 10 berths in the saloon; 6 in the fore cabin; and a small cabin in the bows, which can be used for group leaders if they prefer separate accommodation. She also has a huge saloon with room for everyone for meals, briefings, games and more; a good navigation area with lots of space for young people to get involved; plenty of galley space including separate cooking and washing-up areas; and a great workshop. Don’t forget that your Residential MUST take place primarily among people you don’t already know. Ideally you should come on a voyage where you don’t know anyone else at all; but we can include two or three people who know each other (you are likely to be allocated to different teams or watches). But if you know more than two other people on the voyage then please discuss this with us before booking as we won’t be able to sign you off if the voyage doesn’t meet the criteria for your Residential. And then they were ready to get under way, with lots of fun and laughter. Staff Skipper Diggory seems to be enjoying his return to sail training: Big thanks to sea staff Diggory, Lauren, Unity Bowns, Glyn Collins, Aaron Arnold, Susanna Paynter and Callum Doyle.

One of the young men was from Ukraine and had been homeless after arriving in the UK as a result of the war. He was glad of the opportunity to practise his English and talked about his experience of working in a team: “Last day. Navigation on the night sea. It’s how we worked together … Live all together on board it is the best way to work together. And I guessed you cannot avoid getting new friends”. Most voyages last for five days but it is possible to sail for as little as two days, while some trips last much longer.Thank you for showing us around the Solent and explaining the amazing work you all do. Amazing day, great day learning new skills and meeting new people. Keep up the good work!”

Ocean Youth Trust South’s annual report and accounts for the last financial year are now available. They anchored in Stokes Bay on the first night and then spent Tuesday doing lots of sail training and manoeuvres, as well as going out on the bowsprit, learning to steer and filling in the logbook:

Sea staff and volunteers

She’s fast – an incredible passage-making vessel. She allows us to deliver voyages in new and exciting ways; but she also has a huge amount to offer our longstanding clients. We have enjoyed working together with staff, volunteers and clients to realise the true potential of a fantastic sail training vessel.
