Hand taps are cutting tools used in machining and metalworking to create internal threads, or threaded holes, in workpieces. These tools are manually operated and designed to be used without the use of a tapping machine. They come in various sizes and designs to accommodate different screw sizes and threading requirements. Hand Taps - Hand taps are single taps designed for threading holes of varying depths. They are available a wide range of thread sizes and pitches. There are 3 main tap types: Taper Taps, Second Taps and Plug Taps. Each tap is used at different stages of the tapping process. Double-lead taps and insert taps need different speeds and feeds, and different starting hole diameters than other taps. Choosing the right tap always depends on the type of hole you are trying to cut or clean, as well as the type of material you are tapping. Though this tap is extremely hard to start threads with, it is capable of cutting threads all of the way to the bottom of a blind hole. Machine tapping is faster, and generally more accurate because human error is eliminated. Final tapping is achieved with single tap. The taper tap can be identified by the visible and pronounced tapering of the cutting edges. This provides a very gradual and less aggressive cutting action. The distinct feature of a taper tap is the 8 to 10 threads that taper from the tip to the full cutting force diameter. A taper tap is most often used as a starter tap for difficult blind holes. The gentle taper of the cutting edge is the most forgiving when tapping by hand and allows for a straight hole to be cut in especially hard materials. Tap & Drill Sets - A tap and drill set is an essential collection of tools designed to create threaded holes for bolts, screws, and other fasteners. These sets provide the necessary tools for tasks involving threading holes in materials like metal, plastic, or wood. A taper tap is rarely the final tap used before completing a project however, as the taper leaves incomplete threads cut at the bottom of a blind hole. The biggest problem with simple hand-tapping is accurately aligning the tap with the hole so that they are coaxial—in other words, going in straight instead of on an angle. The operator must get this alignment close to ideal to produce good threads and not break the tap. The deeper the thread depth, the more pronounced the effect of the angular error. With a depth of 1 or 2 diameters, it matters little. With depths beyond 2 diameters, the error becomes too pronounced to ignore. Another fact about alignment is that the first thread cut or two establishes the direction that the rest of the threads will follow. You can't correct the angle after the first thread or two.
