About this deal

The Royal Kludge Sink87G is the company’s Tenkeyless (TKL) offering. It has the same number of keys as most 70% keyboards (including the RK84) but has a more standard layout that is closer to full-size keyboards. There are many reasons why Royal Kludge became the go-to brand for many enthusiasts on a budget. But the biggest reason is that they offer some of the lowest prices while still maintaining key enthusiast features such as hot-swap switches. And while they have their fair share of limitations, they are easy to overlook because of their price tag. As for the dongle range issue…I didn’t find much problem as I used the dongle at the front of my case instead. But yes there is dongle issue definitely. Bluetooth works well as an alternative. The stabilizers are lubed very well which gives them a smooth functionality. There is a small ratlle though that I feel can be fixed by clipping and holee mods later on.

Wireless mode with stable Bluetooth 5.0, hassle-free 2.4Ghz dongle plus USB-C wired mode set no limits about your keyboard connection. The Royal Kludge tries to offer more for less, but it should ensure that the additional features actually work. Instead, the final product is a series of open questions. If you want a wired or wireless Bluetooth 75% keyboard with software-less RGB lighting configuration and a long battery life, this might be the keyboard for you. But when you step outside of those boundaries, the RK84 falters and stumbles. The Royal Kludge RK84 is another variation of the company’s original RK61 design. The main difference is that this model has an 84-key design (70% form factor) and uses 2.4 GHz wireless instead of Bluetooth.

At the end of the day, Royal Kludge keyboards are entry-level keyboards. They will have their fair share of limitations, and they cannot satisfy consumers looking for a more premium keyboard experience. That left the Bluetooth connection. You can pair the keyboard with up to three devices, each accessed via the Function key in combination with Q, W, E. (Long pressing these combinations puts the keyboard into pairing mode.) The distance issues with the 2.4-GHz wireless mode just disappear, making the RK84 a decent choice for a living room keyboard, assuming your device has Bluetooth at all. I found that the keyboard was accurate even a good 14-16 feet away from my testing device. It almost makes me wonder why Royal Kludge added the dongle option at all. Battery Life But thanks to its 5-pin hot-swappable PCB, users are able to put in almost any switch they want. In terms of its Bluetooth capability, the RK61 is able to connect to up to three devices. Slightly better typing angle if you are comparing with K2V2. A lot better if you are comparing to K2V1. As for its wireless capability, the RK84 offers a more reliable and lag-free solution compared to the more budget-priced RK keyboards. It will inevitably not have the same versatility as Bluetooth, meaning its use case is strictly for desktop setups. Overall, the RK84 is perfect for those who want a large keyboard with F-keys and want to have a more reliable wireless connection for general use and for gaming. The review unit came with linear Red switches, whereas I tend to do my day-to-day work on the tactile Brown switches. Combined with the learning curve of typing on this 75% model, it was a whole new experience for me. Overall, despite the hot-swappable nature of the switches, they all felt well-seated without a lot of bounce to them. Royal Kludge is a mechanical keyboard manufacturer that primarily focuses on budget-priced keyboards. They offer great value products and have paved the way for newer enthusiasts to try out mechanical keyboards. Most of their products also have enthusiast-grade features such as hot-swappable switches. And lastly, almost all RK keyboards have wireless functionality. Some are limited to Bluetooth, while others feature a more powerful 2.4 GHz wireless connection. Buyers get all of these features without spending a lot of money. Why Should You Look for Alternatives? First up, was testing the keyboard in wired mode. All this requires is hooking the keyboard up with the included 5.6 inch USB-C to USB-A cable. There's no software needed, as Windows will detect the keyboard automatically. The wired connection was entirely stable with no missed keypresses; in a typing test, my words per minute dropped slightly, but I'm chalking the small gap up to my unfamiliarity with the layout. This is NOT the typical RK84. It does not have 2.4GHz or Bluetooth mode. It can only be connected by a type C cable. With its standard TKL layout, the Sink97G is perfect for users who are not fans of the smaller form factors that Royal Kludge offers. In addition, the Sink87G inherits the 2.4GHz wireless capability of the RK84, making it a good companion for gamers. The only catch here is that the Sink87G only comes with RK Brown switches and is non-hot-swappable. Royal Kludge RK920 Royal Kludge RK920 In this article, we will be further investigating the Royal Kludge brand. We will be having a look at their history and product lineup. And ultimately, we will be helping consumers decide if Royal Kludge keyboards are a good fit for them. Royal Kludge Brand History This keyboard works entirely without software, but Royal Kludge does have a software configuration suite. That said, it's a bit low-effort. First, the software has two different versions depending on your keyboard's serial number, as indicated by an included text file. Second, folks have reported the installer is flagged as malware in some antivirus programs, and it's not signed in Windows, so you have to approve its installation. We recently reviewed the Royal Kludge RK87 Wireless TKL Mechanical Keyboard, which we thought was a decent 80% TKL keyboard that’s affordable and compact, offering RGB illumination, 3 onboard Macros, wireless connectivity, and tactile Brown switches. So the RK84 RGB Limited Edition which we’re about to review, should be just as good, if not better. The keyboard features 2 built-in USB-A pass-through ports and 1 Type-C Port. Use the included USB-C cable to charge the keyboard, or connect it to a PC/laptop and use it as a wired keyboard.

Hot-swap PCB allows you to replace 3 pins/5 pins switches freely without soldering issues. Enjoy the fun of making your own unique keyboard. This aside, for this price, I can say without a doubt that this keyboard is a STEAL. A literal blessing for those looking to enter the mechanical keyboard hobbyist space without spending a fortune to dip your toes. White gasket made of metal but I am not sure if it is aluminium or brass. The only FLAW I can see is 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐎𝐅𝐓𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐄! 𝐈𝐓𝐒 𝐒𝐎 𝐁𝐀𝐃! Tbh you wont need it much other than making macros also sometimes when you fast type it doesn’t register keys and you have to type the same thing again…but that might be my unit fault as I have not heard the same from anyone else. My accuracy was graded at 100%. I would say that I’m usually pretty accurate with my typing skills, but I do still make mistakes. With the RK84, I was particularly careful while I typed because the keys are higher profile than I am used to. Conclusion Royal Kludge keyboards offer plenty of value to the consumer. Most of their keyboards offer hot-swap switches, giving users the chance to explore other mechanical keyboard switches without having to buy an entirely new keyboard. In addition, most RK keyboards are customizable to a certain degree, making them great entry-level keyboards for first-time mechanical keyboard builders. The Royal Kludge RK925 is arguably the company’s most innovative product. It features a unique foldable design as well as low-profile mechanical keys. It is a keyboard that is designed to be paired with mobile devices and is meant to be carried around.
