Reporting this week in the journal Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, the authors describe how they used images from the European Commission’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite mission to locate the birds. They found 11 new colonies, three of which were previously identified but never confirmed. That takes the global census to 61 colonies around the continent. With these in place, animals like these penguins have the space to recover and adapt to our rapidly changing climate, safe from harmful industries. The shape of all penguins makes them aerodynamic. It is the perfect shape for gliding through the water as they swim.The study found a number of colonies located far offshore, situated on sea ice that has formed around icebergs that had grounded in shallow water. I have no hesitation in recommending this really funny story with lots of humour, great illustrations and pacy action that will appeal to young independent readers. It is divided into short chapters, making it easy for them to read in relatively small sections - though I suspect many will really want to read it to the end just to find out what happens! After mating, the female emperor or king penguin will lay a single egg. All other species of penguins lay two eggs. The two parents will take turns holding the eggs between their legs for warmth in a nest. The one exception is the emperor penguin.
