Look at that series of words (“squeezing, wrenching, grasping…”). They tell you everything you need to know about the man. I'm not sure I like “secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster” – we already get that. But what colourful, character-rich description. I LOVE the flint that doesn’t give generous fire! And that then leads to the passage about how the coldness WITHIN HIM affects his features. Brilliant. This popular carol was written by Canon Michael Perry while he was a student at Oak Hill Theological College. He was one of the country's leading contemporary hymn writers. He died in 1996. One thing you will find with the book is that each ghost has one or two more scenes that they show Scrooge. It seems like adapters of the book have generally agreed on which stories to leave out as I don't think I was familiar with any of the "new" tales.As one of the most commonly sung Christmas carols, you might be surprised to hear that this Welsh Melody (Nos Galan) was originally sung with original (and rather bawdy) words! The Welsh tune has English lyrics penned in 1862 by a Scot, Thomas Oliphant. The optimist says that maybe the Christmas spirit can be contagious, like a benign virus, and that the goodness of the season, or even just the day, can spread. That's the story given by The New Oxford Book of Carols, which records that the version we sing nowadays was printed in 1864, although other versions appeared earlier. It was only later that carols began to be sung in church, and to be specifically associated with Christmas. Silent Night is a popular carol composed by Franz Xaver Grüber in 1818 near Salzburg in Austria. Legend has it that one Christmas night some mice chewed through vital parts of the organ in Grüber’s church, so he had to compose a carol that could be played on just a guitar. Though Scrooge is a bit hesitant of this deal, he is ultimately given little choice on the matter, and those three visits comprise the unforgettable spine of this book.
Also, during the Victorian period, many orchestras and choirs were being set up in the cities of England and people wanted Christmas songs to sing, so carols once again became popular in churches and concert halls. Wilhousky, composed by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych as " Shchedryk", and premiered in December 1916 by a choral group made up of students at Kyiv University. Although it is a Christmas carol in Wilhousky's English lyrics, in original Ukrainian lyrics it is a Generous Eve carol ( shchedrivka [ uk], Ukrainian: щедрівка), having nothing with Christianity. As for the word carols, "carol" is a derivative of the French word caroller, the interpretation of which means dancing around in a circle. Carol and carols, eventually came to mean not only to dance but included music and lyrics - hence Christmas Caroling. A Christmas Carol hits on some important societal issues, and it has iconic, unforgettable characters. It also has some laugh-out-loud moments.
