About this deal

Use a low sheen or matt paint as this is less reflective and helps hide imperfections. What grade of lining paper should I use? Ideally try to introduce some gentle ambient heat into the area where the lining paper is to help it dry properly. This will also help the paint dry faster so you can use the room sooner. How many drops does a roll of lining paper do? Lower grades like 800-1000 are the best choice if you’re redecorating walls that are in a decent condition and you want a smooth surface to make things easier. Finally, this extra layer of paper helps trap air in between the wall and the lining paper as well as between the lining paper and wallpaper. These two layers result in added insulation to your home. Should I Use Lining Paper? Look out for lining papers that contain PVC (polyvinylchloride) as this will make the material far less breathable. Why is it important for your walls to be able to breathe? Well, having air flowing in and out through your walls means that the quality of your air is constantly being replenished. This reduces the build-up of stagnant air within your home, lowering the level of any indoor pollutants.

If you decide to go for the heavier grade papers (1700 and 2000) then you may find it difficult to handle and work with, this will obviously depend on your experience and room shape and size. Allow at least 12 hours for drying if you are going to emulsion the walls and 24 hours if you are going to hang wallpaper over the lining paper, if you don’t the lining paper may come off the wall. Newly hung lining paper should be left for at least 24 hours to make sure that it has dried out properly before any paint is applied. If the room is cold then you want to leave it for at least 48 hours. Or, introduce a gentle ambient heat to help speed up the drying process. Before you start hanging lining paper you will need to prep the area you are working in. We are assuming that you have already prepped the walls. If not, see our section below on 'what's the best way to prepare a wall for lining paper?'. If possible empty the room you will be working in so you have full access to the walls and room for your pasting table. Alternatively, move your furniture to one side and cover the furniture and floor with dust sheets. Both are relatively similar, although lining paper does have the advantage of simplicity. Freshly plastered walls will need to dry out completely before being adequately primed, so the plaster doesn’t absorb the moisture from your paint. You can do so using 1-2 coats of a specialist primer or a watered-down version of paint. Failure to do so properly can result in paint peeling off or wearing off further down the line when cleaning.Simply paste the adhesive directly onto the walls then put the paper straight onto them. It’s dimensionally stable, so it won’t expand or shrink. That means a better result, which is free of bubbles and lifting.

Lining paper is a great choice if your walls are in good condition but are painted in a dark colour. For example, if you have dark brown walls and want to cover them with a white or light coloured paint you can forget about prepping (to a certain degree) the walls and you won’t have to apply specialist or extra coats of paint to ensure good coverage. The two main types of lining paper are conventional lining paper and paste-the-wall lining paper. CONVENTIONAL LINING PAPER I have used the 2000 grade on a few rooms in the house and painted over it and I do think it is good quality lining paper. The problem I am facing is that in the final room I am trying to decorate – I discovered when I was attempting to strip it, that it had one layer of bamboo like textured paper which came off quite easily with a steamer but this was papered on top of another shell patterned textured paper and this shell paper was pasted directly onto drywall with no sealer coat. Trying to remove wallpaper from paper(the drywall paper lining) is proving almost impossible and I don’t want to damage the drywall itself in the process by either over wetting it or gouging it when trying to scrape the shell paper off. Lining paper can improve your walls’ insulation properties, making it harder for heat to pass through. That’s especially true for thermal lining paper, which can reduce heat loss by 15%. The result is a more thermally efficient space, which is easier to keep warm – reducing your heating bills over time. WHAT GRADE OF LINING PAPER IS BEST FOR ME? When wetted with paste wallpaper expands, it contracts/shrinks as it dries and can sometimes leave small gaps between the lengths of wallpaper. Lining paper can help prevent your wallpaper from shrinking as it holds the wallpaper in place, thereby reducing the possibility of any gaps forming. However, if you do have crumbling plaster, try to clean and repair the wall before putting up the lining paper. If you're unable to patch the plaster, you may need to remove the loose plaster, fill the hole or area with browning or bonding plaster, and then skim over it. A plasterer may be required if this is beyond your DIY skillset. If your walls are in a poor to average condition you need to think about doing some prep before using a heavier grade lining paper such as 1700 or 2000. If unsure, go for the middle ground and use a 1400 grade. What's the best way to prepare a wall for lining paper? Depending on the state of your walls, lining paper is an important or even essential step in the renovation process. But like any home improvement product, it comes with a range of questions. How does it work? What benefits does it have? What are the different types? Most professional decorators use lining paper before wallpapering a room but as a novice DIY-er, it can be difficult to know whether the added expense of buying and the time involved to hang lining paper is worth it in terms of the finished result. In a nutshell, the professionals wouldn’t use it unless they had to and in reality the condition of most walls, especially in older properties mean heavy duty lining paper is required. So as someone new to the world of lining paper, how do you choose which grade to use on walls that are certainly far from perfect? This article will guide you through when to choose 1700 grade lining paper and its uses. What is Lining Paper and What is the Grading System? Once you have done the first part of the strip, fold over a 50 cm pasted section onto paper that has already been pasted and repeat until the whole strip is done. This creates a concertina effect that looks a bit like the top of a Viennetta ice cream.

If you’re redecorating your walls, you may feel confused about which processes you’ll need to do. Lining paper vs plastering, lining paper vs skimming – how can you tell which will give you the perfect finish you’re after? Lining paper eliminates any guesswork. While it may absorb more paint without the use of a primer, you won’t suffer in terms of adhesion or durability. In other words, it’s up to you whether you want to prime your lining paper beforehand or paint straight on and use a little more paint in the process. HOW TO HANG LINING PAPER

WHAT IS LINING PAPER AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

In principle hanging lining paper is similar to hanging wallpaper with a few subtle differences, which we will tell you here. Now repeat on the next strip of lining paper so you have two ready to go. Once you have put up the first strip, paste the third strip, then put up the second and then paste the fourth etc. This helps the paste soak into the paper and gives it time to expand and lessens the chances of the edges overlapping. If you are hanging lining paper like this 1200 grade lining paper from B&Q horizontally you need to mark down around 10cm from the ceiling. Now measure each roll width — typically 53cm down the wall to see what size strip you have at the bottom. If you have a skinny strip, start further up the wall. Conventional lining paper has been used by decorators for years, in many cases with great results. That said, the clear advantages of paste-the-wall lining paper can’t be denied.
