The U85-AS-Pme (the model reviewed in this article) is the pet version of the Air Reach, so it comes with a pet turbo tool. The U85-AS-Be is similar in most respects, but doesn’t have a turbo tool.

A complaint we have about the tools is that they are fiddly to attach and detach. This is a shame, as it makes the vacuum less convenient and enjoyable to use. It’s also an easy problem for Vax to fix – there’s no reason for a modern vacuum to have tools that are difficult to use. Refine Selection

We don’t think it’s the most manoeuvrable vacuum on the market, but the steerable design does help when vacuuming around the home. We also like that it has a lightweight cylinder that can be lifted from the main body for easier stair cleaning, which helps solve a common issue for upright vacs. We think the Air Stretch Max Pet provides excellent value for money. It’s not the best vacuum for cleaning carpets that we’ve reviewed, but it still does a decent job at removing dirt, hair and other debris. The Vax is also excellent for cleaning hard floors and has a huge cleaning radius, which we think makes it more convenient than many other uprights. Drop a small ball of paper down the top of the hose, this is where the hose meets the dirt container.

Editor’s Note: While the company is based in the UK, Vax vacuums are manufactured in China. Summary As both models are similarly priced, we don’t see any reason to buy the basic version. The pet tool is useful for everyone, regardless of whether you have pets or not. Verdict The Vax Air Stretch Pet Max is lightweight and easy to manoeuvre thanks to its long cord and hose, making it ideal for cleaning around the home. It also has a large dust bin, meaning it can easily accommodate large amounts of dust and debris without the need for frequent emptying. Other features include a turbo tool for pet hair and a 1.5L capacity. The U85-AS-Pme also comes with several attachments, such as a crevice tool, mattress nozzle and dusting brush. The most important accessory is the pet turbo tool, which is handy for cleaning stairs, sofas, and other areas with high traffic. This attaches to the hose, allowing you to clean areas that are difficult to access with the main floorhead.

As the pet turbo tool attaches to the hose, the Vax provides excellent cleaning performance on stairs. It’s easy to clean both sides of a step, which isn’t the case for uprights without a pet tool. We found that the Vax Air Lift Steerable Pet provides strong all-round performance for the price – particularly for people with cats or dogs. It’s never going to match the best upright vacuums for cleaning performance, but we think it’s hard to beat in this price range. There are several accessories included with the Vax U85-AS-Pme Air Stretch. These aren’t the highest quality tools we’ve reviewed, but are good enough for most tasks.
