RELATED: Solved! What Your Plant’s Yellow Leaves Mean and How to Fix Them STEP 1: Make a homemade gnat trap. The adult fungus gnats don’t really fly around a lot and initially aren’t that noticeable unless we disturb a pot by moving it around or when feed watering. We’ll see them fly a short distance to another pot, or maybe spot a few running across the surface of the soil while frantically fluttering their wings. But once the infestation is in full gear, the adult flying gnats are everywhere. The adults can’t do any damage to plants (they don’t eat), so they are more of an annoyance. But their presence is a clear sign that there is an infestation underway inside our plants’ soil. Control, Biological: Products containing Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) are available to homeowners (e.g., Gnatrol, Mosquito Bits, etc.) and can be used to control fungus gnat larvae in soil. These treatments do not affect eggs, pupae or adult fungus gnats. Apply these products with adequate water to help the Bti filter through the soil to reach the larvae. Use several applications spaced five to seven days apart to control newly hatched larvae until the infestation is under control. To prepare the trap, mix all ingredients: .5 cup warm water, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon sugar, a few drops of dish soap.

Essentria IC3 Insecticide is a mix of various horticultural oils that is organic and safe for humans. It is often marketed as a “bed bug killer” but is also very effective against fungus gnats when the plants are treated regularly. You want to apply this every other days or possibly combine with other options. You will need a mister (also called a “One-Hand Pressure Sprayer”) to spray the soil evenly, and make sure to follow the directions! Like all the options, it’s safe to use until a few days before harvest. Do not overwater your growing media. Waterlogged growing medium in houseplants is a prime breeding ground for these insects. Don’t allow standing water to remain in saucers below houseplants or near growing media for long. Repair any irrigation system leaks that crop up, and keep your growing medium away from your potted greenhouse dwellers. Pasteurize the compost in your growing medium to eliminate any larvae that may be feeding on the organic materials there. Use commercial growing medium blends that have been treated with heat if you’re not into the idea of doing it yourself. Move any infected plant matter and growing medium away from others while you treat the problem. Biological Removal of Fungus Gnats To completely get rid of fungus gnats, you will also need an insecticide to kill the pests on top the soil. A product, such as Neem Oil, can be very helpful. There are no-end of folk remedies floating around online forums, but with so many different purported solutions, it is hard to know which is the best one to use. Hydrogen peroxide soil drenches, neem oil, pyrethrin, beneficial nematodes, Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensisSprinkle over bromeliads, pitcher plants, and other areas where small amounts of water turn into mosquito breeding grounds. Harmless to plants, pets, beneficial insects, honeybees, fish or wildlife. Mosquito Bits® are also approved and labeled as a biological control for fungus gnat larvae in planters and soils. Kills fungus gnat larvae in soil without synthetic toxins. Each potato slice can only really get rid of dozens of larvae at a time. Since adult gnats can lay 200-300 eggs at a time, getting rid of a heavy infestation with potato slices alone would be impossible. However, as a way to measure gnat population size and see if your other methods are After 14 days the larvae will stop eating and begin their pupal stage to emerge as adul Repot houseplants with new potting soil frequently. Although fungus gnats live outdoors, too, they generally don’t cause problems in open spaces. Repotting indoor plants gives fungus gnats fewer opportunities to overtake containers.

This type of bacteria produces a toxin that hurts the larvae of fungus gnats and prevents them from being able to eat (it also kills mosquito larvae), but doesn’t affect your plants or roots. Products that contain this bacteria are sometimes listed as “BT” or “BTi” (to indicate the subspecies israelensis– which is particularly effective against fungus gnats). It is also safe for fish, pets, humans and pretty much everything besides larvae. It is safe for organic grows, even in the middle of the flowering/budding stage, and won’t hurt other microbes living in the soil. When bringing any new houseplant home, keep it in a different room from your other plants for at least a few weeks while ascertaining if it conceals unwelcome visitors. Once you’ve spotted insects on a plant, remove that container a safe distance away from your other plants. Spray Neem Oil onto the surface of the soil, and on the plant or pot where there are fungus gnats. Neem Oil kills eggs, larvae, and flying fungus gnats (as well as other pests). Also worth noting is that fungus gnats get their name because the larvae in the potting mix/soil feed on fungi and other microbes. They will naturally be more attracted to mixes that have compost, blood meal, kelp, etc. because there are a lot of microbes (which are also extremely beneficial for plant growth so it is a catch-22).Cannabis roots are not the main source of food for fungus gnat larvae, but roots get caught in the crossfire. Although the main diet of fungus gnats is fungus and decaying matter, the larvae happily gnaw on root hairs and young tender roots of cannabis plants. If you have an extreme fungus gnat problem, use a Pest treatment with “bacillus thuringiensis” (subspecies “israelensis” is best), for example Mosquito Bits, Mosquito Dunks, etc. Sometimes known as “BT.” Dry or powder formulations work best for fungus gnats. Break it up and sprinkle over top of compost, add water to “activate” the bacteria so it starts killing fungus gnat larvae. You can eliminate larvae and stop them from breeding by moving plants from soil to water. Hydroponics is a common method of growing plants without soil, but in water, with a nutrient solution. Since there is no soil, thus no organic matter, fungus gnats have nothing to feast on, so this is a sure method to completely get rid of them.
