Many of the earliest references to the phrase describe people's inability to believe that they look like their photographic portraits. Nevertheless, it may well be that the phrase was used ironically from the start. Whether or not people believed the notion of photographic veracity then, they certainly don't now. We know that the ubiquitous photographic images that fill our visual world are constructs rather than absolute truth. Even early manipulative techniques during the developing process could alter images to suit the photographer's intentions. Photography very soon became more an art form and less a recording process. Now, with digital formats, we are hard pressed to tell reality from fiction. But photographic fraud by newshounds gets much subtler and harder to detect. In an infamous case, the media appeared to operate as lapdogs to a public relations agent for one of the combatant sides. It involves a supposed rescue worker in Qana, during the same war, who was photographed an astonishing number of times by an astonishing number of photographers from an astonishing number of angles in an astonishing number of locations at widely different times brandishing the very same child’s corpse. What is striking about these two examples is that they show different sides of the same coin. In the case of the penalty that wasn't, multiple camera angles were partially obscured by the melee of bodies all vying for position at the goalmouth. They showed the movement of the ball toward the defender and an implied chest down, before clearance. It was only one camera, from one angle and only discovered the following day, that showed a clear handball. It was the verification of something that appeared not to have happened. As historical records, pictures and videos are inherently imperfect—and that’s when they’re not being intentionally manipulated. “The dry plate can fib as badly as the canvas” The complexities of CCTV evidence need to be understood by everyone involved in handling, interpreting and presenting footage, as well as by those of us whose actions and accounts may be scrutinised on the basis of CCTV footage.

Nazanin and the mystery of a decades old tank debt

Instead of providing an absolute “truth”, different meanings can be obtained from the same footage. But understanding the challenges and risks associated with CCTV footage is vital in a fair and transparent system to prevent possible miscarriages of justice. Evidence When his grandfather dies, Daniel inherits an old SLR camera from a time when cameras pointed away from the person taking the photograph. On the camera is an inscription: “Use this camera wisely and remember, regardless of the picture you think you took, the camera never lies.” I think this novel will find a good consistent three-star "beach read" following, but it just felt a little too choppy and poorly executed for my tastes. I found this book to be very intriguing and I wondered what my photograph would show if this camera was used to take my picture! The Camera Never Lies is a reminder that we often keep secrets to avoid pain or embarassment but these secrets can destroy our lives and the truth needs to be made known. It doesn't have a strong spiritual presence in the plot but author David Rawlings does convey in his story the need for honesty and he mentions the consequences and dangers of alcohol abuse, addiction, and acting on physical attraction. We hope that young filmmakers taking part in the term will take away an understanding of different storytelling formats available to them within their own filmmaking, as well as how to use a variety of new techniques to create the different kinds of media they may well be used to interacting with in their daily lives. It’s all about adventuring behind the lens to find out how filmmakers can craft their own versions of reality.

There is a world of difference between the camera and your eye and I will use that to challenge the above statement (ignoring of course the wider truth that some “CGI” is now indistinguishable from reality – and if you still believe that CGI is not “real” take a look at this stunning piece of video– the first few seconds (after the ad) defy belief – here’s another one). As Christians, we have to trust that the God who cannot lie—the God who sees all things as naked and open—the God who holds the depths of the earth in His hands ( Psalm 95:4)—has the power and wisdom and character to handle things that are bigger than we are. We have to trust that He has the perspective and the knowledge to lay out the rules dividing “life and good, death and evil” ( Deuteronomy 30:15).

There’s another goal of this project, aimed at all media companies. In addition to being aware of how readers might interpret the images, it would also be ideal to always provide additional clarification by using captions.

One of the strengths of The Baggage Handler was that so many readers could find themselves in one of the three characters: the ambitious businessman, the harried housewife, the teen trying to find his own definition of success. The Camera Never Lies has a narrower set of characters, but I found them just as relateable. And they’re still asking a universal question: Daniel Whiteley, wife Kelly, and twelve year old daughter Milly appear to be the perfect family and it’s not the case. Daniel is a successful marriage counsellor and bestselling author, his own marriage is at a crisis point, he discovers his daughter is failing school and they're worried about her self-harming.The cookie is set by Krux Digital under the domain krxd.net.
