UK limited-edition 7-inch single [3] A. "Pain Killer" (radio edit) B. "Little Brother" (demo version) It definitely isn't easy to adjust to at first though,” he considers. “So many of our peers that we grew up with, the minute that they weren't fashionable, they seemed to stop, and we could never believe it. We were like, ‘Is that really what was driving it? Being fashionable?’ To us, that was just absurd. Following the success and stress of Ether Song, the band took a short break, but not before touring Australia and New Zealand and releasing a DJ mix album for Azuli Records' Late Night Tales series in February 2004. The mix album (2004) was a collection of some of their favourite songs and main influences, and also contained The Rolling Stones song "Moonlight Mile" as a cover. The band have done some DJ sets in the London area over the years. In March 2009, the band announced they would make their live return later in the year with two acoustic shows at Folk in the Barn in Canterbury in May. In June 2009, it was announced that the band would be releasing a 'Best Of' album, to mark the tenth anniversary of their debut single "The Door", along with a festival slot at Latitude in late-July and a headline performance at London Theatre Royal, Drury Lane the following September. [17] This album, Bottled at Source – The Best of the Source Years, was also their last album for the Source record label. We've had a few moments like that on American TV shows, and that was one of the best ones. It was on such a big scene and it was really heavily used. You could see that the filmmakers and the people behind that show really seemed to get it and appreciated that song. We were just that little bit older,” he says, “but I do remember The O.C. really well – it was a big show! Weirdly, it's played a lot now; I've seen it on TV again recently, so I'm always keeping half an ear out for our song. It was so lovely – we still talk about it. Masterton, James (23 February 2003). "Week Ending March 1st 2003". Chart Watch UK . Retrieved 15 March 2021.Early 2002, the band started work on their second album. After demo sessions in Rye, United Kingdom, the band flew to Los Angeles, California to record with producer Tony Hoffer in the Summer of 2002. In October 2002, this resulted in single Long Distance (reaching no. 31 [7] ) and an arena tour supporting David Gray. Of Wide-Eyed Nowhere the band say: "We surprised ourselves with what came out; a sweeter, groovier set of songs in no hurry to be anything but themselves."'" The South London 4-Piece comprising Olly Knights, Gale Paridjanian, Rob Allum and Eddie Myer recorded this new set of songs at Twin Palms - Olly's garden studio - over the summer of 2021, choosing to let time infuse into the music and mature in a way it couldn't in a pressurised commercial studio setting. Turin Brakes are currently on their UK tour until the end of October, and performed for the first time at Towersey Festival this summer, the UK’s longest-running independent festival. sees Turin Brakes release their ninth studio album, Wide-Eyed Nowhere. The band will play a handful of festivals over the summer, followed by an extensive UK concert tour starting in September. Because festivals and touring went away for a while, what we've noticed is there's more positive feeling from the crowd. Bands appreciate playing at the moment more than they ever did, because it looked like it might never happen again for a while – as absurd as that sounds. So festivals feel really magical and more important than they did before, and long may it last.” Knights, Olly. "If Not Now When". Etch Shop. Archived from the original on 13 November 2012 . Retrieved 13 November 2012. We measure our success by how long we've been doing it and by the quality of the work. To me, real success is if you can keep doing what you're doing and loving it pretty much 100% of the time. Then you're doing it right.”All I can say is, it's like catching a gentle wave, and then it speeds everything up. You feel this force that's bigger than you, pushing you along for a while. Being in a band is bloody hard work. Most of the time you’re having to get up and drive it yourself, and when something else drives it for a while, it's just lovely. Like surfing a wave, you've got to enjoy that feeling when it's happening.

The band spent the first half of 2006 writing new songs, occasionally performing both new and old work at small gigs across the UK. The band did an intimate tour in November 2006 to try out new material. In January 2007 the band entered a recording studio in London to record their fourth album with producer Ethan Johns. After three weeks the band took a break (on 29 January Paridjanian's wife gave birth to a daughter), but the sessions were resumed several weeks later in a bigger studio (also in London). On the last day of March 2007 the band announced that they had finished the recording sessions, and recorded 17 songs. Friends would visit, kids would add a voice or two, bees would buzz and we'd get to sit in the South London sun while the music poured out of the speakers and floated across the lawn. Sometimes we decided it's okay to just let it happen naturally, not to try too hard - just get out of the way let the songs take shape, and that maybe you don't have to be in a bad place to make the deeper cuts." Turin Brakes @ Brixton Academy". XFM. Archived from the original on 5 May 2013 . Retrieved 2 December 2012. Turin Brakes' Rain City was used prominently in a pivotal scene in season one when main character, Ryan Atwood’s mother leaves him to stay with the Cohen family for good. Knights admits he wasn’t exactly the target demographic for The O.C. at the time, but can’t deny the effect it had on the band’s trajectory:

We definitely had a lot of fun over the years by not pinning anything down,” he says, still enjoying the joke. “I'm a big David Lynch fan, and he makes a real point of never fully explaining what things are, and I kind of agree with him. The song’s lyrics have become something of an in-joke over the years, with fans speculating as to the hidden meanings behind the sometimes abstract, sometimes very literal lyrics. Knights isn’t about to spoil the fun after 19 years. Knights says they surprised themselves with what came out: a “sweeter, groovier” set of songs in no hurry to be anything but themselves. Throughout 2012, the band wrote new material and played intimate venues in the United Kingdom. In October 2012, Olly Knights released a solo album If Not Now When on Turin Brakes' own record label, The Complete ATOMIC. [19] In November 2012, the band returned to their studio to record material for their sixth studio album. The album's commercial performance created some tension between the band and their label. In fact, between tours in the United States (their own headline tour and supporting David Gray) in the Summer of 2003, the band recorded a new single for a re-release of Ether Song with Tony Hoffer. The first re-release of Ether Song, featuring an orange version of the cover and single 5 Mile was released on 6 October 2003. 5 Mile charted higher than Average Man (no. 31 [12]) but was largely overlooked by UK radio stations. Overall, the album was re-released four times during its lifespan, [13] and received various bonus discs between regions and versions. The band was on record as being unhappy with the way the record company was treating them and the fans regarding the release. Ryan, Gavin (2011). Australia's Music Charts 1988–2010 (PDFed.). Mt Martha, Victoria, Australia: Moonlight Publishing. p.285. Pain Killer" (also titled " Pain Killer (Summer Rain)") is a song written by Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, produced by Tony Hoffer, and recorded by British band Turin Brakes. It was included on Turin Brakes' second album, Ether Song (2003), and was released as the second single from the album in February 2003. The song debuted at its peak of number five on the UK Singles Chart, at which point the single's formats were deleted. [1] Outside the United Kingdom, the song charted in Italy and the Netherlands at numbers 50 and 64, respectively. In 2014, the band played the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas and toured the United Kingdom, Italy, Ireland and the Netherlands. In 2015, the band started work on their seventh studio album.
