Princess Elizabeth heard of the death of her father while she and Philip were at Sagana Lodge, their home in Kenya (given to her by Kenyan officials as a wedding present), and so she succeeded to the title of monarch of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952. Princess Elizabeth was in Kenya in 1952, representing the ailing King, when Philip broke the news that her father had died. She immediately returned to London as the new Queen. November 1948.
