This novel was heart-warning and brilliant. Although quite slow~paced, I managed to read this within a day and truly loved it. Dan is set up as a secondary protagonist, and the reader is supposed to sympathize with him because his older brother is in juvenile detention for stealing a car and robbing a store. Dan bullies Alex because Dan hangs out with bullies at school, bullies who aren't really friends to him, either. While Dan is a fully fleshed-out character in this story, the other bullies - the Georges and Sophia - are just random evil flat characters. Yeah.’ George C. leans in. ‘See what we can get.’ He slides along the glass and me and Sophie follow. Mr Francis and Miss French are watching the rest of the class as they lean over the tank and touch the turtles and crabs. I’d tell him I wouldn’t dare put my hand in there. Ben said he wouldn’t either. The last time we came here he told me how the biggest fish got to be so big. Alex’s OCD makes him see and feel germs everywhere, so he wears gloves in public, which often makes him a target of bullying—his private “Worry Lists” don’t seem to keep his phobias from multiplying. Meanwhile, Dan adores and always followed his big brother, Ben, but when Ben had to go away (exactly why and where become a light mystery), Dan fell under the spell of bully Sophie, who makes Alex her primary target. Dan unconsciously tries to hide his hurt and anger about Ben by working on a raft the two had begun. In short, alternating first-person chapters, the two Year Seven British boys give readers access to their inner thoughts and pain. When their friendly mums arrange for them to work on Dan’s raft together, Alex must confront his debilitating phobias and Dan must hide the relationship from Sophie. As work together slowly turns into mutual understanding and finally, friendship, readers also see the causes and effects of both bullying and empathy. The high tension and realism (including pop culture, family dynamics, etc.) will keep the interest of avid and reluctant readers alike. Alex, Dan, and Sophie all appear to be white, and the book assumes the white default.

All The Things That Could Go Wrong is a very important coming of age story about how we treat people and how we don't really know what they are going through. That being said, I am clearly not of the age range for this book, and a lot of things did frustrate me.The guide smiles. ‘No, not every shark is like the one in Jaws. They’ve got a bad reputation but they don’t all eat people. In fact, very few do.’ The bullies have attempted to dunk his head down the toilet, called him names, thrown his schoolbooks in a puddle, thrown his trainers over a telephone wire, left him in an empty cave in the middle of nowhere, and spat on him. Alex is terrified and spends his days trying to avoid them, but knows they’ll get him again tomorrow.

Having a child with OCD mustn’t be easy and to see how the mother and father both react to Alex’s disease was fascinating to me. They contrast in their responses but I think this added to the authenticity and highlights the complexities of OCD. Dan! Dan!’ I feel a nudge in my ribs. Sophie’s grinning at me. Her teeth and her blonde hair have been turned purple by the lights. ‘This is boring,’ she whispers. ‘Let’s go to the souvenir shop.’

I think the easiest way to start this review is to say I loved everything about this book. I was a little worried going into it as I really enjoyed We Used to Be Kings by Stewart Foster, which I believe is an adult book, and was worried that maybe I wouldn't enjoy this one as much. But I did. Perhaps even more than We Used to Be Kings. I cheered and cried and hoped – for Joe, and for the amazing people in his life who care enough to be heroes right alongside him. Simply wonderful.’ Jenn Bennett, author of Night Owls Alex is struggling. His severe OCD makes it hard for him to leave the house, especially when Dan and his gang are waiting for him at school . . .
