About this deal

Natural History is a deeply thoughtful, bold, and kaleidoscopic novel, one that, with great audacity and even greater beauty, invites reflection about the weight of legacies and about the masks that make up what we call identity.” Characters sometimes experience the explosion of their own cultural identities through the alteration of a word crucial to them: their own name. Alicia Abravanel becomes Aliza Abravanel as she launches into a new continent, and Juvenal Suárez—his birth name erased by Christian evangelical missionaries—reinvents himself as Karl-Heinz’s interpreter.

There are some great nuggets of wisdom and food for thought in here. I found the last section, Theatre of Memory, particularly affecting and the strongest of the many interrelated stories. Specters of the Avant-Garde». Flash Art (en inglés). 6 de noviembre de 2015 . Consultado el 30 de agosto de 2017. His third novel was published in Spain and Latin America by Anagrama as Austral, and in English (translated by Megan McDowell) by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (US) and MacLehose Press (UK). It was described by the Spanish Newspaper El Mundo as “a brilliant inquiry in the archive of memory.” [16] Many characters in the book are in some form translators or creators engaged in solitary work, who ultimately give up language in favor of another activity or suffer from their contradictions and irremediable in-betweenness. This gives McDowell’s translation and critical responses to Austral the air of participation. One character ends up trapped in a web of duct tape in a sanatorium, as his brain gets entangled by the contradictions of the theory he dedicated his life to understanding.

Carlos Fonseca Suárez (born 1987, in San José, Costa Rica) is a Costa Rican-Puerto Rican writer and academic. He is the author of the novels Colonel Lágrimas, [1] Museo animal, [2] and Austral [3] . [4]In 2017, he was selected by the Hay Festival as one of the top thirty-nine Latin American authors under forty. [5] In 2021, he was selected by Granta Magazine as one of their Best Young Spanish-Language Novelists. [6] He was also chosen by Encyclopædia Britannica as part of their Young Shapers of the Future 20 Under 40 Initiative, as one of the top twenty young international authors. [7] Biography [ edit ]Sonradan aklını yitiren antropolog Karl-Heinz von Mühlfeld’in anlattıklarını dinleyen Yitzhak Abravanel bu duyduklarını kızına, yazar Alicia Abravanel’e aktarır. Onun izini süren Julio ise romanımızın kahramanıdır. Orta Amerika labirentlerinde, Guatemala, San Salvador, Nikaragua’da geçen olaylarla Abravanel’in bulunduğu yerlerde yaşanılanlarla roman olgunlaşır. A beautifully knotted novel which unfolds with every traced layer of its deeply affecting narrative alongside a meditation on memory, mystery and vanishing. Austral is a novel of profound questions.” Colonel Lágrimas is a clever book, slightly claustrophobic in its setting, but spanning the globe through its focus on the old man’s memories . . . It’s beautifully written, with more good work here by the excellent McDowell . . . [The tedium of the Colonel’s life,] in Fonseca’s hands, far from being something to grieve, becomes a celebration of a life less ordinary.”
