Description

The Glenmorangie 10 year old whisky is a unique and exceptional choice for those looking for an intense, yet complex flavour profile. Its maturation process involves first-and-second-fill American white oak casks which adds to its complexity, resulting in a luxuriously soft mouthfeel, clean finish, and subtle fruity notes that are incredibly smooth. Glenlivet 18 year old whisky has been aged in a combination of American ex-bourbon cask and European ex-sherry cask made from American and European oak which impart additional complexity to the whisky. A smaller amount of Glenlivet is also placed in American-made ex-Sherry casks for extra flavour before being finished in new French Limousine oak from Dordogne for its final maturation stage. This careful aging process ensures that Glenlivet 18 year old whisky has achieved its perfect balance after spending at least 18 years in oak barrels before it is bottled and shipped to its final destination. Glenlivet are not known for their brilliance, I will admit. However, their malts are carefully crafted to cater to the ever growing mass of whisky drinkers in a bid to keep them satisfied.

If you’re new to whisky, especially Scotch, you’ll notice the frequent use of the word ‘glen’. Well, glen equates to a ‘narrow valley’– which there happens to many in the rugged landscape of Scotland. OK, that's not a serious title really. What I'm saying is that this is so, sooooo drinkable! I've just finished one sample, (which was to be my third and final drink of the day after reviewing a couple of others) but I've found myself pouring another. Floral and sherry notes. For about twice the price, you can buy something considerably more mature and complex. It's a deeper, darker 'livet, but still not too heavy.

Conclusions:

This whisky has been reviewed very well, so I figured I owed it to The Glenlivet to try it, and give it a fair shake. This malt is a pretty light colored dram, coming in about pale straw. This expression is bottled at 43% ABV. Great whisky but a bit low on ABV. If this whould have had 48% alcohol I think it would have been more balanced, had would have had more depth. Nevertheless this is a great product :-) Well crafted and clever - a lot too discover within a very narrow range of flavors. At first this might seem a simple whisky, but it's not. Let it open up, let it evolve. Great depth with hints of peach, honey like sweetness, leafy influences, vanilla and a hidden sourness. Lovely! Palate: An extravagant and vivid flavour of winter spices lingers on the palate, with sweet hints of cinnamon and cloves combined with a dry oak sensation.

Balance, Complexity: Good balance of sweet and sour. The apple does seem to dominate on the nose while the lemon seems to dominate in the mouth. However, the two seem to balance out. But complex? Not really. This cookie is set by Rubicon Project to control synchronization of user identification and exchange of user data between various ad services.

Glenlivet is strong but sweet, like a strong female leading role. Movie that comes to mind is definitely Steel Magnolias. A follow-up that I felt was needed, after returning to a half-empty bottle after at least 6 months: Bought as a gift, but have this whisky at home. One of my absolute favourites and a noticable step up from the 12 year old. Staff extremely courteous to deal with and delivery exactly as stated. A balanced aftertaste; with hints of cardamon and chicory, sensible and soft, royal and pleasing. Bit fragrant, and flowery. Hint of cocos. And then a series of feinty herbs seem to enter. Milk chocolate at the end. Glenlivet 18 year old was bit of an disappointment after my great experiences with the 12YO. It was surprisingly robust for its age, though that wasn't necessarily the key factor for disappointment.

Once cooled, the stillman ‘cuts’ the liquid, separating the heads (the high alcohol liquid that comes out first), the heart (the desirable liquid of appropriate strength and quality) and the tail (the unusable liquid that comes out last). We recycle the heads and tails, the heart goes into the spirit receiver. MATURATION And thank you for this 18 year old. I like it. It's not overly complex, mind you, but it is sufficiently interesting. Matured in second fill European and first fill American Oak there is a nice spicy tropical balance to this. The Glenmorangie 10 whisky is a complex and delightful dram, with a nose of tart lemon, juicy nectarine, crisp apple, and subtle spice. The addition of first-and-second-fill American white oak casks gives Glenmorangie 10 its unique character. The whisky has a luxuriously soft mouthfeel that is clean and refreshing, finishing with a subtly sweet flavour that is incredibly smooth. Glenmorangie 10 is bottled at 80 proof / 40%ABV for an intense flavour experience.
