With Cimon as the leader of the Athenian League and with him are Pericles, Epikleos, Zeno, Anaxagoras, and the annoying Ephialtes and his guard dog, Attikos, and they will certainly bring Athens very much to the forefront with ferocious battles, political debate and plays during the Festival of Dionysus. a b Preston, John (22 May 2009). "Conn Iggulden: addicted to heroism". The Daily Telegraph . Retrieved 19 April 2018. In August 2014, Iggulden was one of 200 public figures who were signatories to a letter to The Guardian opposing Scottish independence in the run-up to September’s referendum on that issue. It's unusual for me not to rave enthusiastically about a Conn Iggulden novel, but to me this was not nearly his best effort. Shipments to the USA & Canada: To write as authentic descriptions as possible, Iggulden spent his school breaks researching in Rome and Pompeii trying to immerse himself in the history he was writing about. To that end, he donned battle Armor and sailed on the open seas in much the same way his characters did.The Gates of Rome is the first in a series set in the Roman Empire. Having submitted numerous novels to publishers in the past, and had all of them rejected, he was surprised when this manuscript set off a major bidding war among five large publishing houses. i particularly liked the character of Pausanius as I consider him to be one of the most interesting figures from Sparta and found his chapters very enjoyable especially his first introduction in the prologue and his death scene in the temple of Athena. Wolf of the Plains (2007, ISBN 978-0-00-720175-4) (titled Genghis: Birth of an Empire 2010, ISBN 978-0-385-34421-0) A distinctly odd book this. The Lion of Athens is Pericles, a man who helped shape the culture and direction of Athenian politics. But we are presented more with Athens as the central character, the development of a fleet to take battle to the Persians and the excitement of a city that was the centre of almost everything. Pericles is presented as a young man finding his feet and love of culture and the more interesting character is the General, Cimon.

That’s about it for the moment. If you’d like to get in touch with me leave a comment in the forum or you can tweet me @Conn_Iggulden. I’ll leave it there for the moment. If you’ve read my books, you know an awful lot about the way I think already. There’s no point overdoing it.I found it hard to engage with most of the characters. Pericles, the main character, was difficult to understand and contradictory. I did not understand his determination to marry the complete stranger they met on an island. He behaved like he'd never seen a female before. Nor did I understand why he and his wife became so nasty to each other once they were married. Yes, he suspected she was in love with someone else, but given all the talk about Athenian men learning to be calm and mature, you'd think he could do better. Hazelton, John (27 May 2010). "Steers signs to direct Young Ceasar [sic]". Screen Daily . Retrieved 26 June 2013. Behind Pericles lies the greatest city of the ancient world. Before him, on land and at sea, stands the merciless Persian army. Both sides are spoiling for war. Now under Genghis Khan, they unite and go against a common enemy, the mighty slumbering walled empire of the Chin. Bones of the Hills The boy who was abandoned by his tribe in the wilderness has now grown into one of the most powerful and feared leader in history. Genghis Khan has gone after tribes fighting against each other and unified them to exist under his rule. United, they battle against their oldest enemies. I wish you would write more books in the Conquerer series, how things went after the last one. I have re read this series for a second time and will no doubt read them a third time.
