About this deal

My summary says it all, really, but there’s no getting around it: the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, despite only launching at the beginning of 2020, is already this year’s best flagship Android phone. However, no matter how exciting it may be – it has the most zoomable camera we’ve ever seen and a 120Hz screen – it actually costs more than the ludicrously expensive iPhone 11 Pro Max. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra release date was March 6, 2020 in the US and Australia, and March 13 in the UK, alongside the S20 and S20 Plus.

My cell phone, my daily companion for almost 3 years. Have not had any problems so far. It takes really good pictures and videos. The quality of the files is also very, very good. The speed is also very good. You have a lot of settings. Worth buying. Oddly, what’s not on offer here is 45W wired charging, which is supported by last year’s Note 10 Plus, and this year’s S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra, via an adapter that Samsung sells separately. A few companies are even toying with 100W charging, but Samsung seems to be taking its time in rolling out truly fast charging. That's troubling for such a pricey camera phone. You also lose some features in 108MP mode, including motion photos (fine) and beauty mode (won't miss that), and there seems to be some baseline skin smoothing you can't control (not good).Wi-Fi 6 (ax), 120Hz Amoled Display, In-Display Fingerprint Sensor, Optical Zoom, Mobile Communications Standard 5G FDD LTE B1(2100), B2(1900), B3(1800), B4(AWS), B5(850), B7(2600), B8(900), B12(700), B13(700), B17(700), B18(800), B19(800), B20(800), B25(1900), B26(850), B28(700), B32(1500), B66(AWS-3) Phew. For once, there’s plenty to talk about with a new Samsung flagship, and I’m sure there are a few things I’ve missed out. There’s certainly room for me to discuss the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s network capabilities – it supports all 5G standards including mmWave – but this review is already bulging at the seams in its current state, so I’ll add to it at a later date. Making an open-hand gesture to trigger selfies so that you can hold your arm out and frame up the shot – without having to retract and reset for every shot. That move will likely annoy some, it did annoy me initially, as you’re essentially forced away from making the most of a display you’ve spent over a grand on. But, thankfully, at 1080p it remains a very sharp, colour accurate panel that sets a new standard for FHD screens.

And now there's a new max-sized, max-specced phone out there: the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. This actually has a marginally smaller 6.8-inch screen, but it has even more power, better camera performance, and support for Samsung's S Pen stylus. It's undeniably the better phone then, but will also likely cost you even more than the S20 Ultra does currently - though notably the S21 Ultra's launch price is lower than the S20 Ultra's was. When the S20 Ultra does run out of juice, the included 25w USB-C PD charger gets you from 0-100% in just over an hour. Seriously impressive stuff for a 5000mAh cell. 30 minutes of charging got me from 0-57%, so even if you forget to charge the phone overnight you can top it up before you head to work. Swiping anywhere on the viewfinder portion of the screen to flip between the front and rear cameras – to us, this acts like a big button, replacing that tiny ‘flip’ icon that's in a random corner of nearly every other phone.Samsung’s One UI 2.0 software reskins Android 10 with a one-hand-friendly layout, with a lot of the menus items you need to touch appearing on the bottom half of the screen. Another perk is that Google Duo is now integrated directly in the dialer app – we were able to make Full HD video calls, and you can chat with up to eight people. If you’re not a fan of phones with large screens then the Galaxy S20 Ultra is not for you. It dwarfs other Samsung phones, even the historically big Note series, and almost makes the iPhone 11 Pro Max look compact – I didn’t think I would be saying that a few months ago. However, the the extra-large pictures do offer the ability to crop in without as much quality loss. It makes sense for the same reason recording 8K video is often a good idea even if you don’t own anything more than a 4K TV: you can crop and edit without sacrificing detail. It gives you creative latitude, even if you ultimately output to a 12MP photo and 1080p video.
