Returning to his hometown of Crawley, Romesh Ranganathan riffs on veganism, his kids — and offers a peek into the making of his comedy special. The half … If enjoy a good laugh this perfect book. But Do need to have seen him on the TV but Most people are not going to buy a autobiography of a star if don't like him. Whilst some of it made me laugh, the book as a whole was a bit...meh. I enjoyed the parts about his schooldays and was curious as to how he got from teacher to stand up comedian, but the timeline felt very disjointed. It jumped around a lot as he described the push and pull of teaching and trying to do live comedy. Boasts all the classic hallmarks of the stand-up wanting to triumph over trauma. Candidly amusing. I started protesting, but they put their hands up to say, “We’ve got this, don’t worry.” Next thing I knew, he was being frogmarched out. Straight Outta Crawley is the hilarious and irreverent autobiography from comedian Romesh Ranganathan. Not a big fan of biographies to be honest but this one caught my eye (on a kindle daily deal). Glad I gave it a go as I really enjoyed.

Romesh Ranganathan is a comedian, actor and writer. A former maths teacher, he is now known for his award-winning series The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan, his weekly topical show The Ranganation, his sitcom The Reluctant Landlord and the BAFTA nominated Asian Provocateur, which features Romesh's mum. Many celebrities have called Sussex home over the years, but none have been as dedicated as Romesh Ranganathan. Twenty two years later, I finally decided to capitalise on that Pontins buzz. I was 31 and a teacher at the time, and I think I was actually aspiring to be a frustrated artist of some kind, in the way all teachers are. I Googled “comedy night” and found the Comedy Cafe in Shoreditch, London. It had a new-act session on a Wednesday, and you could phone up for a spot. I called and was told by a very nice lady that you were allowed to do the show only if you had done 20 or more gigs before. I lied and was booked for that week. The book follows the story of James, who since the departure of his father, can’t seem to stop worrying about everything. His favourite hobby, baking, is a fun (and delicious!) distraction, but no matter how many AMAZING brownies he makes, James still feels like there’s a missing ingredient in his life . . . I've always loved Romesh Ranganathan and I'm so glad I decided to read his book on audio book. It was so good, with touching moments and hilarious anecdotes that had me laughing throughout.

I even had a former student do it. I was walking through a bar with a couple of friends when he tapped me on the shoulder. “Hey, Sir [all ex‑students call you “Sir” for ever], loving your shows, but just a little thing: drop the race stuff.” I was extremely disappointed that somebody I’d taught had fallen into that trap. Gradually the club started to fill. The people looked terrifying – comedy connoisseurs who were going to hate everything I was doing. I started my set using my Sri Lankan accent. My plan was to reveal partway through that I don’t actually have a Sri Lankan accent. I imagined this would lead to the audience collapsing in fits of laughter, before I was carried out on their shoulders. Really enjoyed this mini autobiography from British comedian Romesh Ranganathan but you probably need to be a fan or at least be familiar with his comedy to enjoy this book.

News . . .

I can barely believe it myself but I’ve written a book. It’s called Straight Outta Crawley and it tells the story of how my childhood messed me up just enough to make me a comedian.
