There are memories of his wife, Jean Taprell Clark, whose schizophrenia meant that they decided not to have children, and who died of leukaemia in 1973. Briggs includes heartbreakingly beautiful photographs and a love letter she wrote to him from hospital. In a section called “Soon” he thinks ahead, to the inevitable care home and even to the grave, but always maintaining a mordant humour. “Future Ghosts” imagines his house being cleared after his death: “There must have been / some barmy old bloke here / long-haired, artsy-fartsy type, / did pictures for kiddy books / or some such tripe.” Sweet sketches and verse about his step-grandchildren – “a shaft of light amid the gloom of old age” – are a welcome interlude. I always loved Briggs's books as a boy, especially classics like Fungus the Bogeyman and Father Christmas. It is a poignant work that deserves its place among the best of bittersweet later-life graphic memoir alongside Maus by Art Spiegelman and Our Cancer Year by Harvey Pekar. I recommend Time for Lights Out for fans of Briggs's books for adults and who don't mind macabre meditations on mortality. So I'm sad to say this book is quite disappointing, depressing and disgusting, and I wouldn't recommend it.

The drawing varies from hasty sketches to beautiful drawings with purposeful shading and depth. I believe this is representative of how Briggs felt throughout composing this book, moving from unsettled to focused philosophy. He also shows off his poetic side in Time For Lights Out with some witty and plain-speaking free verse. Rhymes do sometimes occur and normally for a good reason. Briggs turned next to pastels in 1978’s The Snowman, a wordless story about a boy whose snowman comes to life. But this magical story was still grounded in harsh reality; the next morning, the boy wakes to find only the snowman’s hat and scarf listing on a pile of melting snow. ”I don’t have happy endings,” Briggs told the Radio Times in 2012. “I create what seems natural and inevitable. The snowman melts, my parents died, animals die, flowers die. Everything does. There’s nothing particularly gloomy about it. It’s a fact of life.”

The first three important works that Briggs both wrote and illustrated were in comics format rather than the separate text and illustrations typical of children's books; all three were published by Hamish Hamilton. Father Christmas (1973) and its sequel Father Christmas Goes on Holiday (1975); both feature a curmudgeonly Father Christmas who complains incessantly about the "blooming snow". For the former, he won his second Greenaway. [1] Much later they were jointly adapted as a film titled Father Christmas. The third early Hamilton "comics" was Fungus the Bogeyman (1977), featuring a day in the life of a working class bogeyman. [18] Nevertheless, the children of his long-term partner, Liz Benjamin, provided inspiration and source material for other projects, notably The Puddleman (2004), which grew from a remark made by one of the young children on passing a puddle while the family were out walking in the countryside.
