About this deal

I was really pleased with this delectable strawberry cheesecake flan. It’s easy to make, can be prepared in advance, looks gorgeous, and tastes amazing! What more do you want from a recipe?! A few weeks ago I was rummaging in the dark recesses of my overstuffed baking equipment drawer, when I unearthed a flan tin.

Hello Viv, the quantities are in the ingredients list. My apologies, I mentioned the water twice. Fixed now. Thanks for letting me know. Essentially, the base of a flan tin has a raised middle section. This means that when you turn out the baked cake from it, the top has a ‘divot’ in the centre. This gap is ready to fill with cream, fruit, custard, or whatever delicious things you like! I doubt you would have enough left to freeze anyway. Since this is so light, you can serve up largish portions of this and still feel like it was a light dessert. I get anywhere between 6-8 serves from mine.Or you could just make my fruit custard tart which will give you much more room for filling. Serving and storage Been looking for a nice sponge flan base for a while now, andi have found one at last.Thankyou Marie the flan base is delicious, and so simple to make. The word ‘flan’ apparently comes from the Latin for ‘flat cake’, which I suppose could be used to describe either of these confections! Strawberry cheesecake flan To avoid an over-stuffed pantry, I make my own self-raising flour by adding baking powder to plain flour. either version works in this sponge flan recipe. Hello Sonja, I haven’t tested mixing up a double batch at once but it is quite a large flan as it is. Bake the cake mixture as two 8-inch sandwich cakes, and fill and top them with the jam, chilled cheesecake filling and strawberries. Also not a flan as such, but the same combination of flavours and textures. Serve this fruit flan as is. It’s flavourful and needs nothing more but if you must have something, a little unsweetened whipped cream would do the job.

Sponge flan, or sponge cake, is a light and airy cake commonly used as a base for fruit tarts, custard pies, and other desserts. In addition to traditional flan or tart bases, there are also recipes that use alternative ingredients for a gluten-free or low-carb option, such as using ground almonds or coconut flour instead of wheat flour. Spanish Flan Another popular flan filling is a combination of cream or custard with fruit. The space in the flan case is first filled with whipped cream, creme patisserie (sometimes called confectioners custard), mousse, whipped custard or something similar. Then sliced or whole fruits are arranged on top. They can be covered with a sweet glaze, or just left plain. Hi Marie, Thank you for sharing your recipe, it looks delicious and I can’t wait to try it. Can I ask a question (hopefully not a silly one!). What makes the sponge come out flan shaped i.e. Higher at the sides if it is a pouring consistency? Strawberry flan can’t be frozen. On freezing the chemical structure of both jelly and berries changes and it will become a soggy mess on thawing.
