About this deal

Depending on the country you would like to go to as an Au Pair, you may need an Au Pair Visa for the duration of your stay. That’s a very important legal document that allows you to live with a Host family in the country of your choice and help them with child care and small duties around the house. Usually, Host Parents want to hire someone from July till September because it is the main holiday season and schools are closed. So, chances to find a Host Family for the summer are pretty good.

If you want to hire an Au Pair, you probably have several good reasons for that. Besides the obvious reasons like childcare and help with light housework, there could be less obvious reasons as well. No matter which arguments you will find for hiring an Au-Pair, you will probably have certain expectations towards the new Au Pair and we highly recommend to discuss the expectations in detail in advance. The Au Pair surely has expectations towards you as the Host Family and should be specifically asked about it, if she/he does not voluntarily talk about her expectations.Concerning the duties and task of a Part-time Au Pair, they do not have to do special tasks. As “normal” Au Pairs too, they are responsible for the children, have to do light household duties and prepare meals for the Host Children. Even though Demi Au Pairs focus on language training, they should be willed to do regular Au Pair tasks and fulfil the Host Family’s expectations. Such time intensive language courses ideally allow the Part-time Au Pair to pass some final tests like Cambridge Certificates/ TOEFL/ IELTS test at the end of class, which are always beneficial when applying for a job or university place later on.

Looking at it from the other perspective: Not every Au Pair wants to be treated as the big sister and may even be relieved to hear that. A very close and family-like relationship can lead to the Au Pair never really having time “off” if she is at home. The children might want to play with her/him when she/he is at home at night and on the weekend. It all depends on the country’s regulations. In general, it should be clear that Au Pairs can not apply for a regular legal job if that means they might no longer be able to fulfill the Au Pair job role. If you are interested to become an Au Pair, ask yourself what you expect from the year abroad. There are many, many questions that you as an Au Pair candidate should ask yourself before you decide to look for an Au Pair position but the most essential ones probably are: All in all, the Demi/ Part-time Au Pair is a really good option for those who want to improve language skills and work as a “normal” Au Pair at the same time.

Therefore our recommendation is, that Au Pairs looking for a second job should always go to their Host Parents first to discuss possible options. Which problems might occur when applying for a second job? Don’t be shy, try to find friends as soon as possible → there are a lot of Facebook groups or like-minded Au Pairs in your area You can spend many, many hours browsing through Au Pair candidates’ or Host Family profiles which Au Pair World suggests as “matches” and apply only to those, which you really like a lot. Reading through a lot of profiles from A to Z is time consuming especially as some of the profiles can be extremely detailed.
