About this deal

Each model has its own positives and negatives, described below, which makes choosing between the two such a difficult decision. There are two swappable pairs of handles (5 lbs & 10 lbs) and no adder weights. Changing the weight is even faster on this set because you don’t have to take the time to insert or remove the adder weights. You change the selector pin setting and/or swap the handles. to 5 stars: These are the best adjustable dumbbells we tested. We recommend them without reservation. I’ve also heard that the urethane used on the Pro EXP’s may be better than what was used on the U90s (e.g. it might be overall more durable and/or be better able to withstand hot/cold temps) — But don’t quote me on that, as I haven’t confirmed it.

What are the best adjustable dumbbells? To find out, we tested 30 top-rated pairs by performing an intermediate full-body weightlifting circuit with each set in The Verywell Testing Lab. Our editors (including two certified personal trainers) tested each pair through completing 5-10 reps of bent-over rows, bicep curls, forward lunges, front squats, and bench presses. The Ativafit Adjustable Dumbbell has a small weight range that is good for beginner lifters but comes as a single dumbbell rather than a set.The color bands on the rails correspond with the weight chart on the handle to show what will be selected. These dumbbells are listed as "adjustable," but they only adjust to three weights. When we weighed each dumbbell in the Lab, the minimum weight per dumbbell was 2.2 pounds (although the manufacturer lists it as 2.3 pounds), the medium weight was 3.4 pounds, and the maximum weight was 4.4 pounds (although the manufacturer lists it as 4.5 pounds). But we still found them super easy to adjust while you exercise—simply twist open the ends of the dumbbells to add or remove the small weight bars found inside to increase or decrease the weight. Don’t expect these to feel like traditional fixed dumbbells; their shape is boxy and the handle is caged. The Yes4All 105-pound Adjustable Dumbbell Weight Set is not easy to adjust since it has 28 different weight plates but if you're looking for heavy dumbbells, these go up to 100 pounds per dumbbell.

We also consulted with experts for safety cues and buying advice for adjustable dumbbells. The experts we spoke to included: Although these dumbbells don't come fully assembled, set up and unboxing is relatively easy (it took us less than nine minutes), and the dumbbells ship with a manual with directions and pictures for a six-step setup. An intermediate or advanced lifter shouldn't have a problem setting these up, but a beginner may require some assistance.Since this adjustable dumbbell has a more traditional shape, it can be used in a similar fashion as your basic fixed dumbbell. You can perform the dumbbell pull-overs and overhead extensions as well as other exercises such as the goblet squat because you can hold the inside of the weight securely without compromising your form. The weight increments are also consistent. Each turn adjusts the dumbbell by 5 pounds. The dumbbell provides up to 90 pounds as is. Requiring zero assembly, ProForm's Select-a-Weight Adjustable Dumbbells arrived setup and ready to use. They offer a compact footprint compared to other options on our list, making them great for smaller living spaces. We love this pair for space-saving strength training, but if you're looking for a super versatile set, this isn't the one for you. The papababe Adjustable Dumbbells are super space-saving due to the included connector bar that lets you configure them into a barbell but they are difficult to adjust between exercises. The adjustable dumbbells also come with their own stands, which makes organization simpler. People who use smaller weight rooms or need to save space for other items would be wise to buy adjustable dumbbells. Disadvantages of Adjustable Dumbbells There is a sound of metal on metal since they're not one piece, solid dumbbells. Even though they are strong and durable, you still have to be more careful with them, and you certainly don't want to drop them If at all possible.

Each of the Sport Series has a rubber grip and a more open handle design intended to give the user a wider range of motion. The design of the Sport dumbbells is “sportier” than the other models because it has a more aerodynamic, rounded weight look. The biggest difference between these and the Elite Series, which are what we recommend most often, is where they’re manufactured. Elite Series Weight Increments: 2.5 lbs, 5 lbs, 7.5 lbs, 10 lbs, 12.5 lbs, 15 lbs, 17.5 lbs, 20 lbs, 22.5 lbs, 25 lbs, 27.5 lbs, 30 lbs, 32.5 lbs, 35 lbs, 37.5 lbs, 40 lbs, 42.5 lbs, 45 lbs, 4 7.5 lbs and 50 lbs per hand. The 5 to 50-pound weight options make this a great choice for most levels, but advanced weightlifters may want to opt for a heavier set, like NÜOBELL's 80LB Classic Adjustable Dumbbells. And beginners should note that the 5-pound increments offer less accessibility to a lower weight. To curate a list of the best adjustable dumbbells, members of the Verywell Fit editorial team tested 30 adjustable dumbbells in The Verywell Testing Labto see how they performed in key areas. We rated each set on a scale of 1 (would not recommend) to 5 (highly recommend) for ease of setup, adjustability, ease of use, grip, durability, storage, and overall value.

Customer Experience

In that tiny amount of space, you get (again, depending on the model), between 5 and 90 pounds in 5-pound increments, replacing anywhere between eight and 28 pairs of dumbbells. The Commercial Pro Series can go all the way to 175 pounds (though, I won’t lie, they do start feeling pretty clunky at that point). Since the handle is in the middle of the dumbbell and is surrounded by the pinned weight, it does have a few limitations. For example, you won't be able to do certain exercises such as the dumbbell pull-over for the lats and the double-arm overhead extension for the triceps because you can't hold the weight as you should for those movements.

Even though these are my favorite adjustable dumbbells, they aren’t without their flaws. High Weight Bulkiness As far as why the HOME USE models no longer expand beyond 90 lbs, I do believe I asked them about this a while ago — If I remember correctly, it’s because most customers didn’t get the super heavy models (you have to remember that a lot of their customer base includes casual fitness enthusiasts, or personal trainers who use the dummbbells to train beginners — not serious powerlifters/bodybuilding types). The 5.5 x 11.75 x 6.25-inch dumbbells are super durable. After dropping them on both foam flooring and concrete, there was zero damage to the dumbbells—not even minor scratches. But there was damage to the concrete, so you should be careful not to drop them on your floor (they come with a warning from the manufacturer that says "do not drop"). The extender options are absolutely worth it for those who lift heavier and need more weight; the non-expandable options are a great value for people who don’t need lots of weight. We also noticed that, although the adjustable dumbbells are slightly bulkier than regular dumbbells, they still maintain the traditional dumbbell shape (unlike many other adjustable dumbbells). This allows you to perform any traditional strength training exercise without having to alter your form. We love how easy these adjustable dumbbells are to adjust between exercises. We were also able to maintain a good grip on the dumbbells, even with wet hands, thanks to the grippy rubber handles.
