Rule: Avoid detailed descriptions of characters and don't go into great detail describing places or things. Although golden rum is my usual drink of choice, here I think the dark sort makes more sense; its treacly, molasses quality stands up well to the other ingredients. When I first read a book by the late Elmore Leonard—one of the best-known crime authors in the world—I was 12 years old and fresh off a Clive Barker binge. I needed a change of pace. When I finished reading Rum Punch, about an airline stewardess caught in a money-couriering scheme, I instantly thought, “Someone better make a movie of this book.” It was brash, smart, and so compelling I gobbled it upwithin two days. Yes, rum punch can get you drunk. But it depends on the amount you drink, your body mass and whether you’re male or female. What I recognized in Tarantino’s first adaptationof a Leonard book, especially after multiple viewings, were the unspoken parallels between director and writer.
