About this deal

When it first launched in 2016, Sky Q was a huge overhaul over the Sky+ service it replaced. Its bold aim was to do to television what Sonos did to music – make it truly multi-room. One of the main sources of interference is your Wi-Fi router. Although the 5GHz band isn’t very congested, there can still be issues and, as I mentioned, it’s possible that 2.4GHz interference is causing problems. Instead, type 001, then press Select. This brings up the hidden engineer’s system menu. Go to Network, and then you can change the 5GHz Wi-Fi channel width, selecting from: 80MHz / ch36 (default); 40MHz / ch. 36; and 40Mhz / ch.44. It’s worth trying all three to see if it makes a difference.

Mentioning as there seem to be two threads on Trust Pilot, one for sky in general and the one I have tioned specifically for sky Q.Hello Rodney _trotter, Yes. Many customers choose to self-install their mini boxes. The process is very straightforward and involves plugging in the box to the power supply and then connecting it to your main Sky Q box over Wi-Fi or ethernet cable. The process is explained below. Setting up and Connecting Sky Q Mini Box The Review states that " the wi-fi network itself determines how well the system streams content around your home " and my experience, along with many others, is that the reception by the mini-box is particularly sensitive to interference, resulting in pixilation, or complete drop-out of the stream, including the sound. This interference (source unknown) became so bad we would loose the Sky stream every day for several minutes at a time throughout the day, but at random times. Sky's solution was to hardwire the system, which defeats the idea behind Sky Q, but my own solution was to swap the location of the main box and the mini-box, in relation to the router, and this has helped. However, be wary as the Sky Engineer wouldn't reinstall the terrestrial TV connections they had undone and we had to pay an external engineer to do this (Sky have recently settled a complaint about this by paying the engineer's cost). Sadly, while you can force a Mini box to join your home wireless network it can only do so on the 2.4GHz band, which isn’t fast enough for streaming live TV, so don’t do this. Step 3:You must find and press the WPS button on your main Sky Q product or router, such as your Sky Q Hub or main Sky Q Box. This should be a physical button that can easily be found and pressed with your finger.

What Hi-Fi? Awards 2023 winner. A bit old-fashioned in some ways, but Sky Q still trumps the newer Sky Stream overall

If this doesn’t fix your problem, then you can phone Sky and talk to them about getting a Sky Q booster. Much like an additional satellite in a mesh system, a Sky Q booster gives another repeater in the system. Step 2:There will be an initial setup message on your TV, and you will need to press “Home” on your Sky Q remote. To select the dSCR settings that will allow a compatible LNB or multi-switch amplifier please follow this process. To upgrade the whole communal system so that Sky Q can be operated on single feed mode, the existing multi-switch amplifiers will need to be upgraded for dSCR amplifiers. These allow either legacy Sky or Sky Q to be connected on the outputs and the switch between the two is done on the Sky Q receiver by selecting single feed mode within the settings. When the multi-switch amplifier detects the dSCR signal request it will switch to that, this is usually indicated on the multi-switch itself by a blinking LED on the output that is connected to your Sky Q box.

Using the Mini boxes is almost identical to using the main one. The UI is the same, it gives you access to anything on the main machine's hard drive or watch live TV. The Sky Q boxes create a Sonos-style mesh network, meaning the speed of your broadband isn't so crucial – the wi-fi network itself determines how well the system streams content around your home. If you have Sky Broadband, each box also works as a wi-fi hotspot. Sky seems particularly proud of its Fluid Viewing concept. This allows you to stop and start programmes as you move from one room or device to another, including from TV to tablet, inside to outside your home. Setting up a Mini Box is relatively simple, though you will need to have your existing Sky Q box or router close by.When connecting for the first time, you may experience a temporary drop in connectivity. In this case, it is recommended that you re-connect your Sky Q Mini Box via WPS. You can also change the 5GHz channel that Sky Q uses, although this option cuts the available bandwidth in half. To do this, go to any Sky Q box and press the Home button. Scroll down to Settings but don’t press anything. Each popular Sky TV show now has a ‘show centre’, too. This is a hub from which users can access all seasons, episodes, broadcast schedules and on-demand links, and these show centres even exist for certain Disney+ shows such as The Walking Dead and Loki.

Step 6:Once your Sky Q Mini Box has connected to your main Sky Q TV box or router, you should be able to access live TV and other features in any room with a connected Mini Box. Sky Mini Box Dimensions / SpecsYou can also search by more niche parameters, such as actors, directors or film recommendations. Saying “thrillers with Nicole Kidman”, for example, will bring up relevant suggestions. It's one of the best voice assistants we've used.
