About this deal

A British drama student in New York without a green card, she takes the only job she can get: working for a firm of divorce lawyers, posing as an easy pickup in hotel bars to entrap straying husbands. Inspired by Conrad’s own experiences of captaining a trading steamer up the Congo River, Heart of Darkness is part adventure, part psychological voyage into the unknown, as the narrator Marlow relays the story of his journey into the jungle to meet the mysterious ivory trader Mr Kurtz. Is it just me who does this -who feels they’re constantly watching themselves in the movie of their own life? It’s the setting for an epic saga of warring feudal houses, but it’s as much eco-parable as thrilling adventure story.

In this twisty psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before, an actress plays both sides of a murder investigation. Shelley was just 18 when she wrote Frankenstein as part of a challenge with her future husband, Percy Shelley, and Lord Byron, to concoct the best horror story. Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs.I think Delaney used so many clever techniques throughout the story and it created a very unique, anxiety and character driven psychological thriller (this is just one of many examples). As Claire is persuaded by psychologist Dr Kathryn Letham and detective Frank Durban to ensnare the apparently guilty party, the reader is invited to speculate whether everything is as it appears – what is their real agenda? He wrote in English and took the title of his novel from a Yeats poem, but wove Igbo proverbs throughout this lyrical work.

This is an entertaining and thrilling read, albeit you do have to suspend your sense of disbelief at times. However, I still enjoyed the rest of the story, and I have to admit, I did end up Googling to find out more about “Les Fleurs du Mal” by Charles Baudelaire. Claire loses her job, but is offered an opportunity to entrap Patrick by NYPD cop Frank Durban and Forensic Psychologist, Dr Kathryn Latham who believe Patrick is guilty of murdering his wife and 8 prostitutes that they know of in his life.

They make a completely new identity for Claire and she quite literally has been given the role of a lifetime. Something I loved about this story was that it intertwined Claire's real life and her love of acting.
