About this deal

This sense of timeliness in the frenzied, woollen swirls seems at first to go against Moore’s own assessment of his methodology whereby ‘Because a work does not aim at reproducing natural appearances it is not, therefore, an escape from life – but may be a penetration into reality… as expression of the significance of life, a stimulation to greater effort in living. He is renowned for his semi-abstract, figurative works which can be seen as monumental public sculptures around the world. We first visited Goldmark approximately 6 years ago and immediately liked the informality compared to previous gallery experiences. Sheep Piece is a sculpture by Henry Moore made in three sizes from 1969-1972, starting in 1969 with a 14 centimetres (5.

Moore wrote: “Then I began to realize that underneath all that wool was a body, which moved in its own way, and that each sheep had its individual character. The animals stand out in the landscape in the same, oblique way as his own sculptures, simultaneously fitting in and seeming anomalous. He was often photographed in physical contact with his work, holding it as the maker or resting his hands on it as in ownership. The plaster model is Perry Green, and examples of the bronze casts are at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco [7] and the Hakone Open-Air Museum.

For anyone wanting to start a serious art collection within whatever budget this could be the best place to start. Their exhibitions are always prepared with great care, with videos and catalogs accompanying the shows. In the book Makers of Modern Culture, Patrick Conner describes the "power" of Sheep Piece as not only lying in the "physical confirmation of two massive structures but also in the psychological overtones of warmth and protectiveness that their relationship suggests".

This permeable position between the maker and the made is perhaps what attracted the sculptor to the animal, leading him to produce a range of sketches in pen and ink that would eventually make up his 1980 publication Henry Moore’s Sheep Sketchbook. Zig-zags and rushed ball point pen lines dominate the drawings, thicker and more panicked scratches where there is less light and softer yet vigorous marks on the brighter parts of the scene. Initially he saw them as four-legged balls of wool, but his vision changed as he explored what they were really like - the way they moved, the shape of their bodies under the fleece. I am currently getting too bogged down with heavy laboured outlines and also getting overly tight with detail. By the 1930s Moore was already recognized as the leading avant-garde sculptor in England but it was his war drawings that brought him to the attention of the British public.

It was whilst working in this small room that Henry Moore first became aware of the sheep grazing outside.Henry Moore often sketched ideas for his sculptures in pencil, charcoal, color washes, and even ballpoint pen. The sculpture includes two forms, representing two animals – possibly two adult sheep, or a ewe with a lamb. He drew a ewe and lamb – a large form sheltering a small one – which is an important theme in his larger sculpture work.

Moore lived in Much Hadham, a small village in East Hertfordshire, and worked in a studio overlooking a sheep field. Another cast has been in the Kansas City Sculpture Park in Kansas City since 1976, [12] in the grounds of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Goldmark have the most astonishing range, from the very affordable to the upper echelons of the market.

In this facsimile edition, created under Moore's personal supervision, Mary's little lambs will charm anyone who sees these tender, vigorous drawings. Sheep Piece was named such as he placed it in a field in his grounds, which he rented out to the local farmer for the sheep. It feels really personal and you can clearly see his use of mark making and where he has put a ‘wash’ on etc. Having captured the sculpture up close so the hole framing Moore is the focus, much of the sculpture is out of shot. He was best known for his semi-abstract monumental bronze sculptures which are located around the world as public works of art.
